More news about: Defiance

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Rick Powell has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, after guiding the Yellow Jackets to a 26-10 victory against Earlham on Saturday.

Powell fueled Defiance to its second-straight win and its highest scoring output of the season, by accounting for 301 yards of offense and a pair of touchdowns in the lopsided victory. The senior quarterback averaged 8.0 yards per rush, en route to 136 yards on the ground and completed 12 passes for 165 yards through the air.

Powell also found the end zone twice in the game, running 26 yards for the eventual game winner before connecting on a 47-yard scoring strike through the air with Nick Wiedenhoft just over two minutes later. The back-to-back scores opened up a 21-3 cushion with 11:55 left in the second quarter and sent the Purple and Gold to the 16-point win.

The HCAC Player-of-the-Week honor is the third for Powell in the past two seasons and the second-such award for the Defiance College football program in as many weeks.

Powell and the Jackets will try to continue their climb up the HCAC standings, when they travel to Anderson for a 1:30 pm start on Saturday. Fans not able to make the trip can catch all of the action on the Yellow Jacket Sports Network by going to www.defianceathletics.com/video for the pregame show starting at 12:45 pm.
