Sewanee coach steps down

Sewanee coach Robert Black has stepped down from his role atop the Tiger football program according to athletic director Mark Webb. The school announced Thursday that Black, who has been Sewanee’s head coach since 2007, will move into university relations as a major gift officer effective April 1.

Vice President for University Relations Jay Fisher said, “We are thrilled that Robert has accepted our offer to join University Relations as a major gift officer. His devotion to his alma mater and strong skill set will make him a valuable member of our division. We look forward to his good work ahead.”

A native of Nashville, Black has a B.A. in English from Sewanee. He has compiled a 4-34 record as head coach of the Tigers.

“I am extremely grateful to Robert for his leadership and distinguished contributions to our football program and to the Department of Athletics,” said Webb. “He has recruited outstanding young men to the Mountain and has been an invaluable mentor and role model. I am confident that his keen appreciation for the distinctive mission of the university will make him effective in his new role.”

Said Black, “I am looking forward to my new role and work in University Relations. At the same time, I am very grateful to Mark Webb and the university to have had the chance to lead Sewanee football these past four years. I am proud of our young men and look forward to seeing the program build upon what we have worked hard to create.”

According to Webb, the search for the 30th head coach in Sewanee’s football history will begin immediately.
