Loras picked up its first win of the season in an unexpected place, Hardin-Simmons made Platteville look like a short-term member of the Top 25 and Ursinus knocked off Muhlenberg for the second year in a row in Saturday's Top 25 play.
Brady Ketchum threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns for Central, but it wasn't enough as Loras drove 53 yards in 36 seconds and Aidan Driscoll drilled a 37-yard field goal with one second left to lift the Duhawks past No. 12 Central 38-35. It was the first win for Loras against Central since 2015, and the first at Central since a 31-28 victory in 2008.
Evan England set the tone early at quarterback for Loras (1-2, 1-0 ARC), completing 15 of his first 17 passes.
Central had tied the game with 37 seconds left, as Ketchum hit Jeff Herbers for a 16-yard touchdown at the end of a 13-play drive. But Loras, it turned out, had plenty of time to work with, as England hit Michael Crawford for a 25-yard gain on third-and-7, then England ran for 13 yards on the ensuing play to move the chains again, getting down to the Central 32. Loras took advantage of a pass interference call and a 9-yard run by Jamel Britt to get to the 20, where Driscoll finished off the drive with his game-winning kick.
Josh Kieffer had two and a half of Loras's six sacks of Ketchum and finished with 15 tackles, four of them solo.
Myles Featherston, Colton Marshall and Kolby Youngblood each ran for more than 60 yards and eached scored a touchdown on the ground as No. 6 Hardin-Simmons went up to No. 24 UW-Platteville and rolled away with a 41-0 win. Platteville only got into Hardin-Simmons territory once in the first half, a possession which ended when Brock Bujnoch blocked a 34-yard field goal attempt. The Pioneers (1-2) got down to the HSU 16 in the fourth quarter before Terrell Franklin intercepted Nathan Shackelford in the end zone. The Cowboys (2-0) held Shackelford to 14-for-32 passing for just 106 yards, and the HSU defense registered five tackles for loss and four pass breakups.
Jack Psenicska threw for four touchdowns and Tony Holden ran for 156 yards and a touchdown as Ursinus dominated the clock and edged No. 18 Muhlenberg on the scoreboard, 35-28. Joe Repetti ended a 90-yard drive with a 9-yard TD run with 1:29 to play to cut the Mules' deficit to 35-28, but Muhlenberg was unable to cover the onside kick and Ursinus was able to run out the clock. After nearly knocking off Johns Hopkins last week, Ursinus improved to 2-1, 1-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Case Western Reserve senior quarterback Drew Saxton connected with sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dahlem for a 56-yard touchdown pass with 4:21 remaining for what would prove to be the difference-making score in a 14-10 upset win for the Spartans over 25th-ranked Washington & Jefferson. Saxton finished the game 22-for-32 for 297 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air, including the eventual game-winner. W&J drove down to the Case 8-yard line with 2:22 left in the game but AJ Dudowski sacked Colton Jones and the Presidents ended up going four-and-out. The Presidents were able to force and three-and-out and a Case Western Reserve punt, but W&J fumbled the punt. Case recovered and was able to run out the clock.
Grove City outgained Carnegie Mellon 536-311 but the No. 20 Tartans forced four turnovers and got past the Wolverines 40-33 on Saturday afternoon. The win is the 10th in a row for Carnegie Mellon, although that streak includes a no-contest when CMU was unable to appear in the first round of the NCAA playoffs last year against North Central because of COVID. Logan Young helped the Tartans extend their lead to 40-26 as his interception led to a Hayden Hairston field goal with 52 seconds left. Grove City tacked on a final TD with two seconds to play.
Devon Murray caught two touchdown passes from Blake Eaton and No. 8 Linfield rolled to a 21-3 victory over Redlands, marking the third win for Linfield against Redlands in the past two seasons. The Wildcats held the Bulldogs to just 84 total yards, thanks in part to Blake Rybar's three and a half tackles for loss and Travis Swanson's two sacks.
It was another week of big blowout victories for the Cortaca Jug rivals, as No. 13 Ithaca rolled past Alfred 52-3 and No. 14 Cortland cruised to a 66-7 win against Buffalo State. Ithaca picked up 30 first downs en route to 510 yards of total offense. Eight ballcarriers combined fro 277 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in the win. For Cortland, Zac Boyes completed 14 of 16 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown. Buff State got its lone score on a touchdown pass with four seconds left. Buff State turned the ball over five times.
No. 15 Delaware Valley opened conference play with a 26-6 win at King's, as the Aggies defense held the Monarchs to 39 yards on the ground. DelVal (3-0, 1-0 MAC) put the game away when All-American safety Blaine Netterman took a King's fumble 76 yards the other way for a score. The Aggies, who also got two sacks from Yusuf Aladinov, have won 37 consecutive games in conference.
Wayne Ruby Jr. caught three touchdowns and Deandre Parker added two more as Mount Union cruised past Marietta 55-7 in the teams' conference opener. Braxton Plunk threw for six touchdowns and completed passes of 31, 35, 57 and 58 yards, while backup Noah Beaudrie added a 36-yard pass as well. Star linebacker Drake Neuberger was held in check for Marietta, with just three tackles, none of them behind the line of scrimmage.
No. 4 UW-Whitewater spent a lot of time on the bus to get to Mount Berry, Georgia, and once they got there, they were not willing to give up the football. The Warhawks held the ball for 36 minutes, 39 seconds, and eased past host Berry, 17-3. Evan Lewandowski threw for 301 yards, including a 56-yard TD pass to Steven Hein in the second quarter. Hein finished with six catches for 175 yards in the win.
