Spencer Wiersberg nailed a 43-yard field goal attempt in the closing seconds and McDaniel snapped a 22-game losing streak by defeating Ursinus 30-27 on Saturday afternoon.
McDaniel had tied the game with a minute to play when Will Koester hit Breon Herbert for an 11-yard touchdown, knotting it up at 27-27. Claude Richardson intercepted an Ursinus pass in Bears territory with 33.9 seconds to go, setting up the drive and the win, the first for McDaniel since Sept. 5, 2014. Ursinus had won 10 consecutive games in the series.
UW-Eau Claire's 14-game losing streak came to an end as well. The Blugolds rolled out to a 30-0 lead and cruised to a 40-14 win vs. Wisconsin Lutheran. JT Denhartog threw for four touchdowns and ran for another, while four Wisconsin Lutheran quarterbacks combined to go 9-for-30.
Justice Spriggs rewrote the Hamline record book with six touchdown passes and 475 yards but it took a free kick and one last defensive play to preserve a 42-40 victory over Gustavus Adolphus at Klas Field. The Pipers are off to a 3-0 overall start for the first time since 1988. Despite Spriggs' efforts, nothing was assured until Gustavus' last pass was batted down at Hamline 12 as the clock ran out.
St. Lawrence finally gave up some points, but it wasn't enough to keep the Saints from improving to 4-0 as St. Lawrence defeated RPI 20-14. Sean Richardson threw for 249 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 97 yards and another score to lead the Saints.
Sam Kukura and Ro Golphin each ran wild on Heidelberg's defense and John Carroll improved to 2-1 with a 42-14 win vs. the Student Princes. Kukra picked up 121 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries, while Golphin had 120 yards and a score on 12 carries in the win.
Wash U scored 29 unanswered points in the second half and the Bears rallied from a 21-7 deficit to defeat Birmingham-Southern 36-21. Centre jumped out to a 21-0 lead and cruised to a 49-27 win vs. Chicago. Devin Hayes was 31-for-51 passing for 421 and three touchdowns, while rushing for two more scores as the Colonels improved to 4-0.
Alfred held Ithaca to 54 yards of total offense through the first three quarters and had an easy time in a 20-6 win. Senior quarterback Tyler Johnson had 259 yards of total offense, giving him 8,597 for his career, setting the school record. The Saxons improved to 4-0.
Berry rolled up 477 yards of total offense and improved to 4-0 as well, cruising past Sewanee (0-4) by a 41-3 count. Trey Ciresi caught nine passes for 174 yards and scored two touchdowns in the win. The combination of Seth Peters and Dayton Winn came up big again on offense for Hendrix (3-0), as Peters threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns and Winn had 152 yards and a score on 11 carries in a 42-14 win at Millsaps.
Monmouth held Lake Forest's standout running back, Joey Valdivia, to just 9 yards on nine carries and had an easy time in defeating the Foresters 52-6. Both teams came into the game at 3-0, but Monmouth had a non-conference win vs. Wartburg, while Lake Forest played Beloit and Carleton in its non-conference games, one of which was against a conference opponent. Ben Ketchum had two and a half tackles for loss in the win.
Amherst defeated Hamilton 34-0 for its 20th consecutive win, as the NESCAC got its eight-game season underway on Saturday. The former Lord Jeffs, who ran the table in 2014 and 2015, had seven catches, 113 yards and a touchdown from Devin Boehm. The NESCAC chooses not to participate in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Mark Raymond's first game as head coach at Williams ended like many of the Ephs' games of late, in a loss. But this one happened in dramatic fashion, as Colby capped a 10-play drive with a 19-yard field goal from John Baron with four seconds left to win. 9-7. Williams completed 17 of 30 passes, but at an average of just 4.0 yards per attempt.
Merchant Marine rolled up 579 yards of total offense, including 280 yards and five touchdowns from quarterback Rob Moore, as the Mariners defeated Rochester 55-7. ... Denison held onto the Old Red Lantern, breaking open a close game with 28 points in the third quarter for a 45-7 win vs. Wooster. The Big Red recorded nine sacks in the game, three of them by Nate Keirn.
