UW-Oshkosh secured its grip on first place in the WIAC, while Mount Union won its 100th regular season game in a row, Wheaton held onto its Bell, Case knocked off W&J and UMHB and Linfield held off ranked challengers in Saturday's Week 8 Division III football action.
The Titans, ranked No. 5, cruised past No. 12 UW-Platteville, while top-ranked Mount Union crushed Wilmington and No. 8 Wheaton edged No. 16 North Central. Second-ranked Linfield crushed No. 25 Whitworth, handing the Pirates their first loss, while No. 3 Mary Hardin-Baylor cruised past in-state rival and No. 24-ranked Texas Lutheran 48-20.
Brett Kasper returned to the UW-Oshkosh lineup and returned to form as well as he threw for 396 yards and four touchdowns in a 63-28 win for the Titans. Oshkosh remains alone in first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, one game ahead of UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls, who Oshkosh hosts next week.
Mount Union's 100th consecutive regular-season win was no more of a challenge than most of the previous 99, as the Purple Raiders cruised past Wilmington 69-0. Taurice Scott played just a quarter and a half but that was enough time to complete 11 of 12 passes for 254 yards and five touchdowns, while running for two more scores. Backup Matt Lowry was 5-for-7 passing as well.
After scoring at least 40 points in its past four games, 16th-ranked North Central (4-3, 3-1 CCIW) was kept out of the end zone until late in the contest by eighth-ranked Wheaton, which improved to 7-0, 4-0 with a 17-9 win. Andrew Bowers, who was Wheaton's backup quarterback until Johnny Peltz was injured, went 13-for-18 passing for 231 yards and two touchdowns. The local rivals play for the Little Brass Bell.
Rob Cuda threw five touchdowns and ran for 100 yards, while extending his streak of consecutive passes without an interception as Case Western Reserve defeated No. 15 Washington and Jefferson 35-28. Cuda found Bryan Erb twice on a two-play, 71-yard drive, including a touchdown with 5:03 left to take the lead for the final time. Case improved to 6-1, with the only loss coming to the University of Chicago on the opening week of the season.
Whitworth got on the board first, but Linfield rattled off 35 unanswered points to take a 35-3 lead and the Wildcats cruised to a 52-10 win. Spencer Payne was the leading rusher and receiver for Linfield, with 127 yards on the ground and four catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Alex Hoff, the team's top defensive player, had a sack and also caught a touchdown pass from Sam Riddle, one of Riddle's five on the day.
There was just virtual lightning and a lot of rain in this year's UMHB-Texas Lutheran game, as the Cru struck twice on special teams and also kept Marquis Barrolle to just 34 rushing yards in a 48-20 win. Teidrick Smith blocked a punt to set up one of the Cru's touchdowns and UMHB scored on kickoff returns of 69 and 86 yards in the victory.
Delaware Valley hadn't thrown a passing touchdown all season coming into its game at No. 20 Albright, but freshman quarterback Dashawn Darden connected twice with Mike Jenson as the Aggies knocked off the Lions 28-25. The second touchdown came on fourth-and-7 with less than four minutes to play. The Lions missed two field goals and an extra point, were stopped on fourth and goal from the 1, and threw an interception in the end zone.
Rowan turned the ball over six times, yet was still able to get back into the game in the fourth quarter before No. 4 Wesley put the game away on the last of the turnovers, scoring with 1:42 left to seal a 38-25 win vs. the Profs.
UW-Whitewater knocked another starting quarterback out of the game, then picked off his backup three times, and the No. 6 Warhawks needed just about all of that to defeat UW-Stevens Point 35-27. Jordan Ratliffe returned to the lineup for the Warhawks and ran for four touchdowns, compiling 86 yards on 21 carries. Ryan Winske had two of Whitewater's four picks on the day.
Seventh-ranked St. Thomas pulled away from Bethel in the third and fourth quarter to defeat the Royals 45-14. Bethel was held to just 1 yard passing on the afternoon. Jordan Roberts ran for 194 yards and two scores, while John Gould was an efficient 18-for-21 for 186 yards and two scores for the Tommies.
Wartburg took out last week's frustration on its archrival, as the No. 22 Knights rolled past Luther 47-7. Logan Schrader was 19-for-21 passing for 257 yards and four TDs.
No. 10 Johns Hopkins sent Gettysburg to its second consecutive loss after a 5-0 start as the Blue Jays defeated the Bullets 36-7. Brandon Cherry and Stuart Walters combined for three touchdown runs in the win, while Jonathan Germano threw for one and ran for another.
Hamline gave Concordia-Moorhead a battle, tying the score at 20-20 midway through the third quarter, but the No. 17 Cobbers edged away to win 30-20 on the road and improve to 7-1 overall. Similarly, No. 19 Illinois Wesleyan had a battle from Elmhurst but scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to win 49-28. Artie Checchin had 162 yards and two touchdowns on just three receptions for the Titans (7-0, 4-0 CCIW).
