Kalamazoo Falls in Final Seconds at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College football team lost a hard-fought 25-24 contest at Trine University Saturday afternoon in the season finale.

Down 3-0 in the early going, Kalamazoo embarked on a nine-play, 82-yard drive that consumed just 2:56. The biggest play of the drive occurred via Dawson Skupin's legs with a 38-yard rush to the Trine 44-yard line. Lucas Hanifan caught passes of 11 and 12 yards. After Kyler Maiorana scampered four yards to the two-yard line, He found the endzone on the ensuing play for a 7-3 edge.

Down 10-7, Dawson beat the defense on third-and-seven with a nine-yard run. Moments later, he found Hanifan for six yards and another first down. Skupin hit Jaden Johnson for a 25-yard touchdown. The extra point made it 14-10 with 6:20 to go in the half – and the score remained the same entering intermission. 

Leading 14-13 late in the third, Hanifan had a solid kick-off and a penalty put the ball at the Kalamazoo 49-yard line. Two plays later, Hanifan hauled in a pass from Brayden Ledin for a 23-yard gain. Johnson caught a 25-yard strike from Ledin and the extra point pushed the margin to 21-13 with 3:44 to play in the frame.  

Up 21-19, Cameron Lewis converted a 24-yard field goal at the 12:50 mark of the fourth quarter, extending the edge to five after a 13-play, 59-yard drive.

The Hornets forced a punt after an 11-play drive that took 4:45 off the clock. Kalamazoo went on a 10-play drive that took up 4:57. On fourth-and-three from the Trine 34-yard line, an incomplete pass gave the ball back to the home team with 3:06 to play. With just 19 seconds left, Trine recorded the game-winning touchdown. Two incomplete passes by the Hornets ended the contest.

For the game, Kalamazoo earned 26 first downs. The squad threw for 319 yards and rushed for 119 for 438 total yards. The Hornets converted 12-of-18 third downs but went one-for-five on fourth downs.

Skupin hit 16-of-23 for 180 yards and a touchdown while Ledin hit 12-of-25 for 139 yards and a score.

Hanifan hauled in 12 passes for 141 yards while Johnson had five catches for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Skupin led the ground attack with 72 yards on eight carries while Maiorana had 50 yards on 23 attempts and a score.

Raymond Cargill and Corey Garrison II had 11 tackles apiece. Cargill had two tackles for loss while Garrison had one. Tommy Kartes and Ben Maurice had eight stops each. Brody Quinn had an interception and returned it 25 yards.

Lewis converted his lone field goal attempt. Hanifan averaged 20.3 yards per return while Aaron Zekman had a 24-yard return.

The Hornets complete the season at 4-6 overall, including 1-6 in MIAA action.
