Kalamazoo Shuts Out Anderson 27-0

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team did not let the nearly two-hour weather delay dampen a 27-0 victory over Anderson University Saturday evening.

The game ended after a second weather delay – occurring with 4:43 remaining in the game.

The Hornets are now 3-0 on the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, Kalamazoo took over after forcing a punt. Starting at their own 25-yard line, the Hornets picked up 30 yards on a pass interference call and a pass to Aaron Zekman from Dawson Skupin, moving the ball to the 29-yard line. On third-and-one Conner Bell scampered for three yards to the 17-yard line. After another interference call, Skupin hit Aravind Krishnan for the two-yard strike. The extra point by Eddie Langton gave the home team a 7-0 advantage with 5:01 to play in the half.

Kalamazoo recorded a fourth-down stop on its own 19-yard line with just under two minutes remaining. Skupin orchestrated a tremendous drive. After hitting Kyler Maiorana for 13 yards and Braeden Lavis for four yards, he rushed for 53 yards until he was pushed out of bounds at the 11-yard line. On second-and-13, Brayde Ledin connected with Lucas Hanifan for a 14-yard touchdown. The extra point pushed the lead to 14-0 at intermission.

The Hornets gained possession after a punt late in the third quarter. Landon Russell gained 21 yards on the first play on the drive, moving the ball to the four-yard line. Facing third-and-14, Skupin connected with Hanifan for the touchdown. A missed extra point left the game at 20-0.

Ben Maurice stepped in front of a pass on fourth-and-13 and promptly returned it 69 yards for the touchdown with 5:50 to play, sealing the victory.

For the game, Skupin connected on 15 passes for 125 yards and two scores. Ledin completed his only pass for a 14-yard touchdown.

Hanifan and Zekman each hauled in three passes. Hanifan registered two scores on 42 yards while Zekman tallied 34 yards. Bell caught five passes in the victory. Skupin led the ground attack with 964 yards on 14 attempts while Bell totaled 50 yards on 17 rushes.

Defensively, Raymond Cargill led the way with seven tackles, including five solo stops. Bryce Balabuch shared team-best accolades with five individual tackles. Brandon Speed chipped in five total stops. Dillon Gacki had a pair of tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks. Jaylen Bowles-Swain and Cargill had a pass break-up while Maurice and Speed had interceptions.

It marked the first home shutout for Kalamazoo since Oct. 12, 2019 against Finlandia (44-0).

The Hornets return to action next Saturday, Sept. 27, when they play at Calvin at 7 p.m.
