DELAWARE, Ohio – Maryville College quarterback Bryson Rollins delivered a historic performance Saturday afternoon, throwing for a school-record 502 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Scots past Ohio Wesleyan, 48-24, at Selby Stadium.
Rollins completed 29-of-36 passes without an interception, breaking the program's single-game passing record while orchestrating a balanced attack that piled up 636 yards of total offense. Wide receiver Steph Carter Jr. was his primary target, finishing with nine receptions for 243 yards—the third-highest single-game total in Maryville history—including a game-breaking 75-yard touchdown late in the first half.
"Yeah, you know, I thought he really played spectacularly," Head Coach Ben Fox said of Rollins. "I thought that Steph played great, too. You know, I thought all our receivers… we felt like we had a little bit of an advantage there with our receivers on their DBs. Protections held up, and they executed at a high level."
Maryville (2-0) struck early and often after trading scores in the first quarter. Chris Cooper's five-yard run evened the game at 7-7, before Rollins went to work through the air. He found Jalen McCullough for a 17-yard strike and then connected with Zae Richardson from 35 yards out to push the Scots ahead 21-7. After OWU closed the gap, Rollins answered immediately with his longest completion of the day—the 75-yard bomb to Carter Jr.—that sent Maryville into halftime up 28-14.
The Scots extended control in the third quarter with touchdown passes to McCullough and Teddy Orton, sandwiched around a Jake Brock interception that set up a short-field score. Running back Griffin Swinea capped a nine-minute fourth-quarter drive with a one-yard plunge to seal the win.
Defensively, Maryville bent at times against Ohio Wesleyan's up-tempo attack but made key stops in critical moments. The Scots held the Battling Bishops to 3-of-5 in the red zone and forced two turnovers.
"I thought the defense made some really opportune stops," Fox said. "When you play those kinds of offenses that play that fast with good players… you just have to play the next play. They did that, and then we got down there and got to stop a couple of times in the red zone and made them kick a field goal."
The Scots dominated time of possession (38:39 to 21:21), converted 9-of-13 third downs, and averaged 8.4 yards per play. McCullough (seven catches, 66 yards, two TDs) and Richardson (three catches, 74 yards, one TD) joined Carter in highlighting a deep receiving corps, while Swinea and Cooper combined for two rushing scores.
Fox summed it up simply: "Yeah, you know, I'm really happy that we won it. Honestly, the game went about like what I thought it was going to go."
The Scots are off this week and then will face Pikeville in the team's home opener on September 27th.
