SAN ANTONIO, Tx. - In an intense showdown that pushed both teams to their limits, the Berry Vikings narrowly missed victory, falling 38-35 to the Trinity Tigers in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings set the pace early with Brandon Cade's explosive 26-yard rushing touchdown, and they carried that energy into an 8-0 lead. Berry's defense delivered with pressure that led to a safety early in the second quarter, helping them maintain a 10-7 advantage. But despite their strong start, Berry found themselves in a back-and-forth contest as Trinity answered with key plays of their own.
Cade's performance was nothing short of outstanding. Rushing for an incredible 234 yards on 30 carries, Cade was relentless, crossing the goal line four times. His final regulation touchdown, a gritty 2-yard run in the fourth quarter, evened the score at 35-35, pushing the game to overtime.
Christian Lewis also had his moments, linking up with Cade for a 10-yard passing touchdown that briefly put Berry back on top in the third quarter. Lewis completed 13 of 21 passes for 176 yards, overcoming a few turnovers to keep the Vikings competitive.
Berry's defense was resilient, with Kristofer Thomas leading the way, while Grady Bryant's clutch interception at the end of the third quarter set the Vikings up for a potential game-winning drive.
The game culminated in a tense overtime period, with Trinity's Tyler Huettel clinching the win with a 33-yard field goal after the Vikings' final attempt was thwarted.
Berry will return to Valhalla next Saturday to take on the Colonels of Centre College at 1:00 PM ET.
