Lynx Football Dominates Austin College

More news about: Rhodes

The Lynx Football team traveled to Sherman, Texas, this weekend to take on the Kangaroos of Austin College. This competition was the second non-conference test for the Lynx this year and a measure of how well they could travel before they head to Virginia next week.

The Lynx were dominant in all three facets of this game and looked poised for success from the very beginning. On the very first drive of the game, Cooper Pennington intercepted a 3rd down pass and returned it for 18 yards, putting the Rhodes offense in a great situation for their first drive of the game.

Soon after, the Lynx offense, with Taylor Haas commanding the huddle, was able to drive down the field quickly and score on a 58-yard connection from Haas to John Hampton IIILogan Ahern converted the extra point. After the offense got going, there was no looking back.

The second score came on special teams when Thomas Conroy blocked an Austin field goal attempt, and Nick Floyd returned it 75 yards for a Lynx touchdown. Following this, defense continued to force punts and create turnovers, and offense continued to put the ball in the endzone.

To start the 2nd quarter, Evan Reeder scored on an 8-yard quarterback keeper. Later, with 8 minutes left in the half, Jelani Lovett scored on a 7-yard rush. As the clock on the first half was winding down, Evan Reeder drove the offense down the field, and Robert Daniel capitalized with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, putting the Lynx up 35-0 going into the half.

To start the 3rd quarter, a 15-yard Willem Griego reception downed on the 1-yard line set up another Jelani Lovett rushing touchdown. The Lynx now held a commanding lead of 42-0. On the next drive, Austin scored their first touchdown of the game, but Thomas Conroy blocked yet another kick attempt, and the Kangaroos stayed at 6.

As the 4th quarter started, the Lynx were now in chew clock territory. With just over 3 minutes left in the game, Tanner Nau completed a 31-yard pass to Jacob Kastl, and Barrett Buchanan converted the extra point. The Lynx now led 49-13, and a final stop by the defense and a victory formation from the offense ran the clock out, sealing the Lynx road victory.

Evan Reeder led the Lynx in passing with 173 yards. Robert Daniel netted 58 yards on the ground, and Elijah Bane finished with 49. John Hampton III had an impressive game, finishing with 6 catches for 149 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Max Sale and Thomas Conroy both recorded 8 total tackles. Sale also recorded a sack. Jay Davis had 5 tackles and 1 for loss. Cooper Pennington recorded an interception plus a breakup, and Hart Penfield also recorded a breakup.

Following this impressive performance by the Lynx, they will prepare to hit the road again to take on Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. This game will kick off on Saturday, September 21st, at 6 p.m. These two teams have never faced off, and this matchup comes as part of the SAA-ODAC crossover scheduling agreement. The Lynx are 1-1, and the Hornets are 1-0.
