Redlands Football drop their season opener to George Fox

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands football team (0-1) prepared for their season opener to come at home against George Fox University (GFU) on Saturday night, but due to air conditions from to the Line Fire, they instead had their game was moved to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Sunday morning where they were unable to make a comeback in a 17-3 loss.

The Bulldogs trailed 14-0 with two minutes left in the first half. Starting quarterback Tyler Tremain started the Bulldogs from their own 35 yard line where he completed a pass to Kev Markossian for 13 yards.

After a short run pass to Donovan Maxey-Parler, Tremain then got their first big play of the game which went for 25 yards to Scott Blankenship Jr.

Following two incomplete passes Tremain ran for four yards to the GFU 21 where the Bulldogs then ran the play clock out and the game clock down to six seconds. Sergi Rodas-Mendoza then trotted out and connected from 38 yards, his first field goal as a Bulldog, as they went into the break, down 11, 14-3.

The final drive of the first half was the last time Tremain was out there as he did not return for the second half.

Then in the second half Evan Aguon left the game after a hard fall, leaving Redlands without their quarterback and top wide receiver who had four catches for 32 yards before exiting.

The best drive of the second half came in the last four minutes of the game when the new quarterback Jayden Mckey managed to gain 36 yards on nine plays, but a sack fumble inside GFU territory gave the possession back to the Bruins who kneeled out the clock.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Bulldogs' defense had seven tackles for loss (TFL), a sack from Jaeden Thorn, and an interception that was returned for 11 yards by Craig Hunter.

They also held the Bruins to only 2.7 yards per run. The average drops to 1.7 if you take away their three longest runs (22, 13, 10). Through the air they allowed only 4.7 yards per attempt.

Maximus Susi had two TFLs, Thorn had 1.5, Cole Smith 1.0, Jax Lee 1.0, Laurence Williams 1.0, and Andrew Placido 0.5.

Tremain threw for 70 yards and ran for 11 in the first half. Mckey had 124 yards through the air and eight yards on the ground.

After a bye week this coming Saturday, they head to No. 23 Linfield University on Saturday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. in McMinnville, Oregon.
