BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College football team (3-3, 3-0 USA South) scored a season-high 49 points as the Tornados won their third-consecutive USA South Conference contest, defeating Southern Virginia University (1-5, 1-2 USAS) 49-28 on a crisp Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Brevard's 49 points in the contest marked the most single-game points for the Tornados since the 2017 season, when BC dropped 58 points in a road victory at North Carolina Wesleyan (October 28, 2017).
Sophomore quarterback Ethan Beamish totaled a career-high 300 yards on 18-for-28 passing with a career-best four touchdowns through the air. Beamish has thrown for more than 200 yards in each of his first six career starts for BC this season.
Chancellor Lee-Parker continued his torrid stretch with his third-consecutive 100-yard-plus performance with 122 yards on 22 carries and two touchdown scores. Lee-Parker was able to add a pair of receptions for 17 yards, bringing his total yardage to 139 for the day. Fellow senior running back DJ Taylor added 40 yards and a touchdown, as Brevard racked up 203 total rushing yards and three total scores on the ground.
Reggie Taylor II, a sophomore wide receiver from Charlotte, North Carolina, reached the 100-yard mark for the second time this season, as the speedy wideout hauled in both of his targets on the day for 100 total yards and two touchdown receptions. Fellow sophomore Adam Douglas added a season-high 74 yards on five catches and his third touchdown reception of the season. Zackary Orr, BC's senior wideout from Charleston, South Carolina, caught five passes for 53 yards and his fourth touchdown of 2023.
Junior defensive back and reigning USA South Defensive Player of the Week James Woods led all Tornados with six tackles, while Robert Dorsey and Toby Naylor each logged five tackles and 1 1/2 tackles-for-loss apiece. Dorsey added a quarterback sack and a pair of forced fumbles, while Trey Williams brought the quarterback down twice. Dylan James added four tackles and a team-high two pass breakups, and the Tornados as a unit racked up eight tackles-for-loss and four sacks.
Southern Virginia's Lachlan Haacke totaled 209 passing yards and a touchdown, but Brevard's defense held SVU's vaunted rushing attack to just 76 total yards. The Knights were able to score three of their four touchdowns on the ground.
Brevard's offense converted 25 first downs and outpaced the Knights 503-285 in total offense. BC's defense forced SVU into nine total punts, and the Tornado offense went 8-for-12 on third down conversions.
BC got the ball to start the contest and drove right down the field, using an eight-play, 67-yard drive capped with a 25-yard strike from Beamish to Orr that gave the Tornados the early lead, 7-0.
Following a SVU three and out, Brevard added onto its early advantage as Beamish connected with Taylor II for another 25-yard touchdown score, extending the Tornado lead 14-0.
BC's defense came up with another three and out, but the Knights came up with a critical third down interception that they returned inside the Brevard 12-yard-line. SVU punched the ball in the end zone, cutting the deficit to a 14-7 margin.
Following an unsuccessful fourth down try and a missed field goal into the whipping wind, the Tornados rebounded with a six-play, 45-yard drive that ended with a Lee-Parker three-yard touchdown run, as the hosts carried a 14-point, 21-7 lead into the halftime intermission.
After consecutive punts by both sides to begin the third quarter, Brevard's defense forced another SVU punt before Beamish logged his third touchdown pass of the afternoon - a 27-yard dot to Douglas who caught the touchdown pass in the midst of a SVU pass interference penalty that gave Brevard a 28-7 lead.
Brevard forced another SVU punt, but a costly muff gave the Knights the ball in prime real estate and the visitors found the end zone for the second time in the contest to trim the deficit back down to 14 points, 28-14. However, BC immediately dialed up a home-run play as Beamish hit Taylor II in stride for a 75-yard touchdown pass to cap the third quarter off and extend the lead, 35-14.
BC began the fourth and final quarter with a nine-play, 53-yard drive that was capped with Lee-Parker's second rushing touchdown of the day, as the Tornados took a commanding 42-14 advantage. A pair of BC turnovers on another muffed punt and a fumble in SVU territory resulted in 14 unanswered points - as the Knights scored all 28 of their points off turnovers - bringing the score to a 42-28 margin, but Brevard was finally able to put the game away as senior running back DJ Taylor broke off a 42-yard touchdown run, and the Tornados won their third consecutive contest in conference play.
Brevard will attempt to make it four wins in a row as the Tornados travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina to take on Methodist University on Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m.
