RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia Wisconsin football team reigned supreme on Saturday in the battle of Concordias. The Falcons remained undefeated in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference at 3-0 with the 57-42 victory at Concordia Chicago.
The Cougars started the scoring in the first minute of the game with an interception returned for a touchdown.
The Falcons responded with a touchdown with a seven-yard pass from senior Michael Purkey (Woodstock, Ill.) to sophomore Nick Crowell (Las Vegas, Nev.).
The Maroon and Gold scored on its next drive to take a 14-6 lead.
Freshman Nick Klein (Rome City, Ind.) closed the first quarter scoring with a 30-yard field goal.
The Cougars extended the lead to 21-9 after a touchdown to start the second quarter.
Senior Breven Palpallatoc (Las Vegas, Nev.) recovered a fumble in the endzone to cut into the CUC lead.
The next series, junior Justice Kaneta (Brighton, Colo.) forced another fumble that was recovered by Justin Cabrera and the Falcons took advantage. Purkey found sophomore Kekoa Carmichael (Las Veg, Nev.) open down the left side for a 24-yard touchdown.
Senior Evan Lischka (Manitowoc, Wis.) intercepted a ball that set up the next CUW touchdown when Purkey connected with AJ Kelly for 16 yards.
A last-minute touchdown for CUC sent the teams into halftime tied at 29.
Junior Pierre Summers III (Columbus, Ga.) started the second-half scoring with a 10-yard rushing touchdown.
Senior Ashar Thomas (Punta Gorda, Fla.) then scored on the next possession with a six-yard scamper to give CUW a 43-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The cats cut into the lead with a touchdown to start the quarter but the Falcons responded with a 45-yard touchdown rush for Summers.
Panic set in for the Cougars and the next drive saw Justice Kaneta intercept a pass and take it to the house for a 30-yard touchdown.
The Falcons rushed for a season-high 283 yards with 172 yards for Pierre Summers III and 93 yards for Ashar Thomas.
Michael Purkey threw for 140 yards.
Justice Kaneta stuffed the stat sheet with nine tackles, one forced fumble and an interception.
The Falcons return home on Saturday to face Benedictine.
