Case Western Reserve University senior quarterback Alex Fromberg accounted for five touchdowns and the Spartans' defense turned in a strong effort to limit the Geneva College triple-option offense to 139 rushing yards in a 42-7 win on Saturday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Spartans improved to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with the win, while the Golden Tornadoes dropped to 1-2 overall and in the league with the loss. It was the Spartans' ninth-straight win over Geneva.
Fromberg turned in the best game of his Spartan career, completing 12-of-25 passes for a career-high 295 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for a career-high 96 yards and two more touchdowns. He has now thrown for five touchdowns and 491 yards this season without throwing an interception.
Junior wide receiver Noah Coyne caught four passes for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and now has three touchdowns through as many games this season. Junior Ethan Dahlem added four catches for 87 yards in the game.
Junior cornerback Dominic Sais recorded his second and third interceptions of the season during the game, accounting for two of the three turnovers forced by the Spartans' defense during the day. Graduate student safety D.J. Wolf led the team with nine tackles (all solo), while senior defensive end AJ Dudowski added seven tackles (three solo) with one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. CWRU's defense finished the game with nine tackles for loss.
CWRU tallied a season-high 504 yards of offense, with season highs in both rushing yards (209) and passing yards (295). Meanwhile, the defense limited Geneva to just 223 yards for the game (139 rushing and 84 passing).
The Spartans opened the scoring in the first quarter when Fromberg connected with Coyne for a 23-yard touchdown pass, giving CWRU a 7-0 lead. Early in the second quarter, the Spartans were able to cover 94 yards on just five plays, with Fromberg converting a third-and seven from his own nine yard line with a 61-yard pass to Dahlem, and scoring two plays later on a 26-yard pass to senior wide receiver Riley Knurek. It was Knurek's second touchdown of the campaign.
Geneva answered back on their next drive, going 62 yards on nine plays and scoring on a 29-yard run to pull back within a touchdown. However, a 29-yard kick return by sophomore TJ Yoder set up a 63-yard touchdown pass from Fromberg to Coyne to extend the Spartans' lead to 21-7.
The score remained 21-7 through the end of the half. On the first drive of the third quarter, Fromberg added to the Spartans' lead with a three-yard touchdown run. With 13:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, Fromberg added an 18-yard touchdown run to put the team ahead 35-7, and later in the period, first-year quarterback Tyler Fikis ran the ball in from 38 yards out for the first touchdown of his career, putting the Spartans in front 42-7.
CWRU will be on the road for the next two weeks, starting with a trip to Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia next Saturday, September 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
