BALTIMORE, MD – The 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins football team outscored visiting McDaniel 28-0 in the second half of the 100th all-time meeting between the two teams to pull away for a 44-7 victory at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays end the regular season at 9-1 overall and 8-1 in the Centennial Conference and must now wait until Sunday at 5 pm for the announcement of the 2022 NCAA Division III Football bracket to see if they earn an at-large bid into the playoff field.
The Blue Jays carried a 16-7 lead into the half, but scored twice in the first six minutes of the third quarter to quickly turn the nine-point lead into a 23-point advantage. After the Hopkins defense forced a quick punt to open the second half, the Blue Jay offense needed just four plays and 77 seconds to go 66 yards with junior Spencer Uggla breaking outside and covering the final 40 of those yards to push the lead to 23-7.
Nick Seidel intercepted McDaniel's Jared Snow on the ensuing Green Terror possession and set the Blue Jay offense up at the McDaniel 46-yard line. It took just one play to cover those 46 yards as quarterback Ryan Stevens hit Josh Polce in stride down the sideline and he raced into the end zone to make it 30-7 with just over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Blue Jay defense held the Terror to just 31 yards of total offense in the third quarter and maintained the 30-7 lead until early in the fourth quarter, when sophomore Bay Harvey connected with senior Lance Large from 21 yards out to push the lead to 37-7. The two-play, 31-yard drive was set up by a 23-yard Artie Collins punt return.
Hopkins closed the scoring with just under two minutes remaining when senior quarterback Wes Glime scampered 25 yards on a quarterback keeper to polish off a seven-play, 62-yard drive.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Blue Jays scored 16 straight points in a nine-minute span in the second quarter to grab a 16-0 lead. The first of Polce's two touchdowns on the day and a four-yard scoring run by Danny Wolf were wrapped around a 39-yard field goal from Joe Zahner.
McDaniel got on the board just before halftime with its most impressive drive of the game as the Terror covered 90 yards in eight plays and capped the drive with a two-yard Dre Carter touchdown run. The big play on the drive was a 51-yard Trent Gaskins reception on third-and-12 that took the ball to the Blue Jay 25. Carter went in a short time later to make it a nine-point game at the half.
