Nor’easters storm past Colonels, 37-21, to open CCC play

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Jarrett Henault threw for four touchdowns, including two to Mikey Brennan, to lead the University of New England football team past Curry College, 37-21, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Homecoming Weekend at Blue Storm Stadium.

Heanult, who now has 10 total touchdowns in two career games against the Colonels, finished 13-of-20 for 173 yards through the air. Brennan pulled in three passes for 86 yards and two scores. Shane LaPorte had a team-high five catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Curry setup for a 38-yard field goal on the first possession of the day. Chris Winslow came of the right side, blocked the attempt and Trey Snowden recovered to keep the Colonels off the board early [Watch]. The Nor'easters were forced to punt, but a Curry blocker touched the ball and AJ DeFilio was able to jump on it to give UNE new life at the Colonels' 25-yard line [Watch].

LaPorte caught a pass from Henault near the five-yard line, broke two tackles and found the end zone to put the Nor'easters in front [Watch]. UNE led 6-0 after a missed extra point and the score remained the same after a quarter.

The nation's third-leading rusher Montie Quinn broke off a 28-yard touchdown run to put the Colonels ahead 7-6 at the 10:43 mark of the second quarter. Curry had another miscue on a punt after stalling the UNE offense and Jack Mahoney dove on the loose ball to give the Nor'easters another shot on offense. Mahoney made the Colonels pay again as he ran in from two yards out to give UNE the lead back at 13-7 with 5:36 to go until halftime.

The Nor'easters extended their lead to 20-7 at the half as Brennan pulled down a tough catch in the back of the endzone for a score with 20 seconds left [Watch].

Neither team scored on its first possessions of the second half. UNE was setup to punt from its own 29-yard line at the 8:15 mark of the third but the snap was launched over the head of punter Andre Haddad and recovered by Curry's Cam Cruz in the end zone for a touchdown. After the extra point, the Colonels trimmed the deficit to 20-14.

That would be as close as Curry would get for the remainder of the game. UNE stole the momentum back on the second play of its next drive when Brennan hauled in a 71-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 27-14 [Watch].
DeFilio faked his defender and caught a 27-yard touchdown on the Nor'easters' next drive as the hosts led 34-14 after three quarters. UNE stopped the Colonels on fourth down to start the final quarter. A long rush by Eugene Jordan helped setup a 21-yard field goal by Robert Inniss, Jr. to put the Nor'easters ahead 37-14 with 7:24 to play.

Dontae Noel blocked a Nor'easter punt to give Curry the ball on the UNE 39-yard line with 2:56 remaining. Justin Mullaney found Gabe DeSouza for a 32-yard pass to start the drive and Quinn ran in from two yards out for his second score of the day for the final points of the afternoon.

Jordan led the Nor'easter ground game with 80 yards on 14 carries. Mahoney finished with 47 rushing yards.

Mullaney was 18-of-28 for 172 yards through the air for the Colonels. Maxx Bell was his favorite target, hauling in eight catches for 95 yards. Quinn finished with a season-low 60 yards rushing, well below is 143.2 yard per game average.

On defense, Will Peters paced the Nor'easters with seven tackles, including three for a loss and two sacks. Antonio Giano had six tackles (three solo) with 1.5 for loss and a pass breakup. Snowden was stellar in the secondary, breaking up three passes and adding three tackles.

Bailey Smith (11 tackles) and Michael Sims (10 tackles) led the Colonels. Greg Silvia, Max Ackerman, and Blake Schader each had a sack.

UNE is on the road next weekend at Husson for the Second Annual Lobster Trap Game. Kickoff in Bangor, Maine is set for 1 p.m.
