WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team found the host Wartburg College Knights a tough match-up on Saturday. UD would lose their first league of the season by a 7-27 final score. A defensive battle with the two teams keeping each below 178 total yards in the game. UD led through the air with 144 yards passing while the Knights gained just 72. The Knights led the ground attack with 106 yards of rushing and the staunch Knight defense held UD to -20 yards rushing.
The Spartans defense Jalen Gaines scored the lone points of the day on a 38 yard fumble return. UD ended the day with 10 tackles for losses of 34 yards and had four quarterback sacks. Both teams picked off the quarterback twice with UD's Tyler Geiman grabbing one and also forcing a fumble. Dalton Wood collected nine tackles trailed closely by Garrett Hertzfeldt who had eight and Brogen Stewart who had seven.
Brandon Coppola completed 11-21 pass attempts for 92 yards. Jacob Keller came in for relief and completed 7-18 pass attempts for 52 yards. Kallion Buckner was surrounded all day by Knights and rushed 11 times for just 19 yards. Karletty Faamatuainu grabbed eight passes for 95 yards to led the receiving corps. DaMon Street caught two passes for 30 yards and Elliott Pipkin had five receptions for 27 yards.
Conner Halla punted eight times for 268 yards for an average of 33.5 yards and placed one inside the Knights 20 yard line. Tyler Sheffield kicked off twice for 120 yards and Jacob Wolf was 1-1 in extra points.
The Spartans host the Coe College Kohawks next week on Chalmers Field with a 1 p.m. kick-off. Coe is coming off a large, 63-7 victory over the Luther College Norse on Oct. 23.
