Springfield College Topples Norwich, 56-7

More news about: Springfield

Northfield, Vt. - October 16, 2021 - The Springfield College football team jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back as it handled Norwich, 56-7, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at Sabine Field.

The Pride improve to 2-0 in conference play and evened its overall record to 3-3. The Cadets slipped to 2-5, 1-2.

Through two conference games, Springfield has outscored its opponents 116-7, and the Pride's offense was impressive again in the win as it churned out 516 yards of offense and over 400 yards on the ground for the third time this season.  Isaiah Cashwell-Doe (Woburn, Mass.) made the most of his opportunities as he carried the ball five times for 144 yards and two scores, while Ryan Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) and David Wells (Shelton, Conn.) each added a pair of touchdowns.  Defensively, Springfield has allowed only one touchdown in its last 10 quarters of football, as Aiden Lewin (Orlando, Fla.) made seven stops and DJ Brown (Wading River, N.Y.) added six tackles, a sack, pass break-up, and forced a fumble. D'Aunte Moore (Rosindale, Mass.) recovered a fumble and made an interception to account for a pair of turnovers for the Pride.

After Norwich came up empty on their opening drive, Springfield marched 77 yards in nine plays, highlighted by a 41-yard strike from Wells to Ian Porter (Middletown, N.J.) before Wells scampered in from four yards out to make it a 7-0 game at 8:59.  Moore picked off the Cadets three players later, and after Porter and Wells connected again for 37 yards, Deguire broke free around the left end for a five-yard score at 5:06.

Springfield pushed its lead to 21-0 with just over 10 minutes left in the half when Wells ducked behind his line for a one-yard score to cap off a nine-play, 82-yard drive that was kept alive by a 28-yard third-down run from Cashwell-Doe.

Norwich responded with their only touchdown on the game on their next drive, going 74 yards on seven plays to pull with 21-7 at the 7:50 mark, only to have Cashwell-Doe find daylight down the sidelines for a 66-yard score two plays later to give Springfield a three-touchdown lead again. On their next drive, Patrick Ladas (Berlin, Conn.) made two defenders miss and rumbled in from 35 yards out at 3:31 before Brown forced a Norwich fumble and Deguire broke free from his second score of the day to give the Pride a 42-7 lead inside a minute to play in the second quarter.

The Pride had the ball to start the second half, and facing a fourth down in Norwich territory, Caswell-Doe found the end zone from 42 yards out as the Pride's lead ballooned to 49-7 at 11:44.  Springfield's final touchdown of the game came early in the fourth quarter when Arsen Shtefan (West Hartford, Conn.) scored his first career touchdown on a four-yard run with 13:49 left in regulation.

Springfield will play on the road for the sixth time in seven weeks as it heads to WPI next Saturday for a 12 pm tilt.
