LISLE, IL - The Benedictine University football team completed a total turnaround from the 2018 season, sending the seniors out with a 44-0 shutout of Concordia Chicago to cap a 7-3 campaign.
Benedictine turned the ball over on the opening drive of the contest before the defense rose up to stop Concordia Chicago deep on the Benedictine side. The offense responded with an eight-play drive, covering 76 yards to open the scoring. Kiandre Morris reeled in a three-yard pass from Tyler Jarnagin at the 6:30 mark to make the score 7-0.
The defense again stopped Concordia Chicago, this time in the rezone, before another long drive served as the prelude to a gigantic second quarter. Benedictine marched 90 yards on eight plays to extend the lead to 14-0 on another touchdown from Morris, a 26-yard run, in the opening minute of the second. Morris caught a 13-yard touchdown pass with 2:12 left in the half to jump ahead 21-0. Forcing a quick three-and-out, Benedictine needed just 20 seconds to move 59 yards and push the lead to 27-0 when Ben Moore hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass with 59 seconds left.
Benedictine started running the ball more in the second half, again taking over after another bend but don't break stop in the redzone. Joshua Williams plunged in from two yards out at the 3:04 mark of the third to push the lead to 34-0. Williams scored again early in the fourth on a six-yard run and Tanner Mateus tacked on a 24-yard field goal to cap the scoring. Concordia Chicago drove down to the five-yardline with seconds remaining but turned the ball over to end the game.
Williams carried the ball 21 times for 165 yards to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for the season, averaging nearly eight yards per carry. Jarnagin completed 20-of-25 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns and also added 75 yards rushing. Moore caught six passes for 100 yards while Alex Lopez added six catches for 78 yards. The offense piled up 570 yards with 287 on the ground and 283 through the air. The team averaged over nine yards per play. Braxton White, Scottie Bobeck and Michael Hawthorne all logged nine tackles on defense with White tallying a sack. Bobeck finished the season with over 100 tackles.
Benedictine (7-3, 6-1 NACC) will finish at least in second place pending the outcome of Lakeland-Aurora tonight.
