Wheaton, Ill., Oct. 19, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team fell behind early and could not rebound in a 52-13 loss at No. 5-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) Saturday at McCallie Field in Wheaton, Ill.
Wheaton remained undefeated at 6-0 and 5-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) with the win, while WashU fell to 4-2 and 3-2 in the CCIW. The Bears had their five-game road winning streak snapped.
The Thunder are one of 23 remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA Division III. WashU allowed 698 yards of total offense, the most since allowing 707 to Case Western Reserve on Oct. 29, 2016.
Wheaton jumped out to a 38-0 lead at halftime. The Bears punted eight times in the first half and were limited to 39 yards of total offense.
Senior quarterback Johnny Davidson scored from two-yards out midway through the fourth quarter to end the shutout.
The Bears added a TD in the fourth quarter after junior Charlie Krause blocked a Wheaton punt and classmate Will Hurley corralled the ball and ran five yards for the TD to make it 52-13.
Davidson finished the day 21-of-38 for 159 yards and was sacked seven times. Sophomore running back Melvin Aninagyei-Bonsu ran for a career-best 58 yards on nine carries. The Bears were limited to a season-low 205 yards of total offense.
Sophomore defensive back Langston Laramore-Josey made a career-high 11 tackles, while junior defensive back Andrew Whitaker and sophomore linebacker Anthony Brown added 10 stops each.
Davidson averaged 43.0 yards per punt in the loss, and had three at 50+ yards and four inside the 20-yard line.
WashU concludes a two-road road trip at Illinois Wesleyan University (4-2, 4-1 CCIW) on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
