CARLISLE, PA – The 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins football team used a 23-point second quarter to fuel a 37-15 Centennial Conference victory at Dickinson Saturday afternoon. The win, the Blue Jays' 13th straight against the Red Devils, improves Hopkins' record to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial. Dickinson slips to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the CC.
The Blue Jays broke a scoreless tie at the end of the first quarter with the 23-point outburst in the second to grab a 23-6 halftime lead.
After taking over at their own 17-yard line late in the first, the Blue Jays got on the board on the seventh play of the second quarter when senior quarterback David Tammaro hit junior wide receiver Ryan Hubley in stride down the middle and Hubley raced untouched into the end zone for a 40-yard touchdown reception.
The Devils had a chance to slice into the deficit on their ensuing drive, but Joe Tischler blocked a Dickinson field goal attempt and Robert Fletcher returned the ball to the Dickinson eight; four plays later, Mike Eberle drilled a 22-yard field goal to push JHU's lead to 10-0.
Dickinson pulled within 10-6 three minutes later as the Devils got a long touchdown reception of their own – this one a 33-yard strike from Tim Graham to Chris Longo with 4:34 on the second-quarter clock.
It didn't take the Blue Jays long – 14 seconds to be exact – to answer as sophomore Harrison Wellmann returned the kickoff after Longo's touchdown 95 yards for a score of his own to push the lead to 11 at 17-6. The 95-yard kickoff return is tied for the longest in school history.
After forcing a quick three-and-out on Dickinson's next possession, the Blue Jays took over at their own 23-yard line with just over two minutes remaining in the half and needed just six plays to go 77 yards with Tammaro scoring from 12 yards out on a quarterback draw up the middle to account for the 23-6 halftime lead.
The Blue Jays continued to roll early in the second half as they took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and used eight plays to go 65 yards with Luke Yakely capping the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Johns Hopkins was forced to convert just one third-down opportunity on the drive with Tammaro converting a third-and-five with a 22-yard completion to Wellmann on the sideline. Yakely's touchdown came two plays later.
Dickinson scored the next nine points to slice the deficit to 30-15 with more than 13 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. A bad snap on a Blue Jay punt sailed out of the back of the end zone to make it 30-8 midway through the third period and a 22-yard Robert Geiss-to-Daniel Salamone strike down the middle early in the fourth made things interesting.
Dickinson blocked a Blue Jay field goal attempt that would have made it 33-15 with just under 10 minutes remaining and the Devils moved into Johns Hopkins territory before Ross Andersson intercepted Geiss at the JHU five-yard line to kill the drive; Andersson returned the interception to the Blue Jays 34.
The Blue Jays then put the game away with a 66-yard drive that ate nearly four minutes off the clock; Tammaro hit senior Jacob Yohr down the middle from 31 yards out with 71 seconds left to close out the scoring.
Tammaro was 26-of-37 for 347 yards and the two touchdowns and also rushed for 30 yards and the one score. Wellmann had a career-high eight receptions for 142 yards and added three kickoff returns for 156 yards and the one score.
Nick Hartman led the Blue Jays defensively with nine tackles, while Tischler added five tackles, including two sacks, to go along with his blocked field goal.
Graham and Geiss combined for throw for 252 yards and the two scores and Geiss added 90 yards rushing to lead the way offensively for Dickinson. Brian Snow was in on a team-high 11 tackles for the Red Devils.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 5 when the Blue Jays travel to Ursinus to take on the Bears in another key Centennial Conference game.
Notes: Wellmann's 298 all-purpose yards are the most by a Johns Hopkins player since Sam Wernick had 341 at Susquehanna on October 23, 2010 • His 298 yards also rank as the eighth-highest single-game total in school history. Wellmann's 95-yard kickoff return marks the fourth 95-yard return in school history; senior Patrick Kelly is one of the co-holders of the record with Wellmann as he took one back 95 yards against Gettysburg in 2017 • With today's win, Johns Hopkins finishes the decade with a 38-4 record in the month of September • Tammaro went over 9,000 yards of career total offense with his 377-yard effort today (9,099).
