BROCKPORT, NY – The College at Brockport football team jumped out to a 45-0 halftime lead and never looked back on its way to a convincing 55-6 victory over visiting Alfred State on Homecoming & Family Weekend at Bob Boozer Field on Saturday.
Brockport posted 600+ total yards of offense for the first time since week seven of last season when they dominated Buffalo State at home by the score of 65-7. The Golden Eagles (3-1) are winners of three in a row headed into next Saturday's Empire 8 opener at St. John Fisher College. Saturday is also Camp Good Days' COURAGE BOWL XV, the annual football game between Fisher and Brockport, to benefit the children and families at Camp Good Days. The contest will be played at Growney Stadium on the campus of St. John Fisher, with kick-off slated for 6 p.m.
Freshman quarterback Freddy June continues to make strides each week and posted the top passing performance of his collegiate career to date. June finished the day completing 12-of-16 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He also added a first quarter rushing touchdown to give the Golden Eagles at 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.
Jala Coad carried the ball 11 times for 102 yards and two scores, while freshman Vincent Daviero added 17 carries for 79 yards and his first collegiate touchdown. Coad now leads the team with four rushing TDs this season. He scored with 3:21 left in the first quarter to give the home team a 21-0 advantage. He then added a three yard TD run early in the second quarter to hand the Golden Eagles a 35-0 lead.
Imhotep Cromer scored for the third time in two games as he caught a 45 yard TD pass from June in the first quarter. Derrick Chance added a 15 yard TD reception and finished the day with two catches for 25 yards. Joseph Ortiz caught two balls and is now tied for first on the College's all-time receptions list with 220 career catches.
Brockport's stingy defense was at it once again, holding Alfred to just five yards rushing on the ground. The Pioneers could only muster 67 total yards on the day and they were forced to punt 12 times. Ben Damiani had a nice night on the defensive end as he posted six tackles to lead Brockport, including two tackles for a loss of five yards. Danny Housman chipped in with five tackles and preseason All-American Alex West added four of his own.
Brockport totaled 369 yards rushing and five touchdowns on the ground. Rashad Law totaled eight carries for 72 yards and scored his first collegiate TD in the fourth quarter with 11:47 to go to cap the scoring for the home team.
Kicker Dustin Moyle knocked down two field goals of 20 and 30 yards on the day. He also made all seven of his extra points and finished with 13 total points on the afternoon.
Alfred State managed to find its way on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter as Anthony Allen plunged in a one yard TD run to set the final score at 55-6.
Brockport was a perfect 7-for-7 in the red zone on Saturday and the Golden Eagles also dominated time of possession as they held the ball on offense for 36:20.
Bryce Szudzik broke up two passes and made three stops, while freshman lockdown corner Raylens Boutin added to his team lead with two more pass breakups.
Alfred's Elijah Rimpel made a game-high nine stops for the Pioneers. Andrew Thomas made three catches for 21 yards for the visitors.
Next weekend's Courage Bowl has grown into one of Camp Good Days' largest fundraisers since its inception in 2004. Each year, the St. John Fisher and Brockport square off in a Division III football game to benefit Camp Good Days. Prior to The College at Brockport, the University of Rochester and Alfred University had been opponents of St. John Fisher in The Courage Bowl. For the game, Camp Good Days selects honorary coaches and cheerleaders for both teams. These are Camp Good Days campers who have been diagnosed with cancer and would normally not be allowed to participate in a real football game. The Camp Good Days Courage Bowl gives these campers that opportunity. At the conclusion of the Courage Bowl, the Teddi Trophy, named in memory of Teddi Mervis, Gary Mervis' daughter and the inspiration behind Camp Good Days, will be presented, which will later be inscribed with the date of the game, final score of the game, names of the six Honorary Coaches and the names of one player from each team who displays exceptional leadership and sportsmanship.
