St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 10, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team celebrated Senior Day with a 44-6 victory over Carroll University Saturday at Francis Field in St. Louis.
WashU improved to 8-2 and 7-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), while Carroll ended its season with a 3-7 record and 2-7 in the CCIW. The eight wins are tied for the second most in school history.
Prior to the contest, WashU honored its 20 seniors. The Class of 2018 recorded an overall record of 25-15 (.625), captured the 2015 and 2016 University Athletic Association (UAA) championships, the 2016 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) title and made an appearance in the 2016 NCAA Playoffs.
"It was a great week of practice and they guys were ready from the get go. This was an important game for our team," said head coach Larry Kindbom. "Our offense came out fast and our defense shut down the run.
It was great for the seniors to finish the regular season with a solid win. I feel great about the way we played today. The relationship we have with this seniors the last four years has been awesome."
WashU started fast scoring the first 17 points in the opening quarter to jump out to a commanding lead. Junior quarterback Johnny Davidson tossed a dart to senior wide receiver Matt Goldberg for a 29-yard touchdown pass across the middle with 11:38 left in the first.
After the Bears forced a punt, sophomore kicker Joe Rogan booted a 48-yard field goal to make it 10-0. On the ensuing possession, senior defensive back Ben Marcus picked up a fumble and scampered 45 yards for the TD.
Carroll was limited to a pair of field goals in the second quarter (36, 21) as the Pioneers had 62 yards on 19 plays. Senior kicker Charles Coccia booted a career-long 48-yarder to end the half as WashU led 20-6.
Carroll had the 154-152 advantage in total yards and 22:48-7:12 in time of possession. Senior linebacker Jake Coon led WashU with 11 tackles.
WashU scored on the opening possession of the third quarter for the fifth-straight week after Davidson found junior tight end Mitchel Groen across the middle for an 18-yard touchdown to make it 27-6.
Singer hauled in an 80-yard TD reception, and then Groen got his second TD of the game with a three-yard catch to push the lead to 41-6. Coccia added a 34-yard field goal to round out the scoring.
Davidson finished the day 20-of-35 for 305 yards and four touchdowns, while Singer had six catches for 127 yards and a TD. WashU outgained Carroll 436-327, and limited Carroll to 160 yards on the ground.
Coon tied his career-high with 17 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss. The Bears recorded 11 tackles for loss in the victory.
The 2018 NCAA Division III Selection Show is set for Sunday, Nov. 11, at 4:30 p.m. The Bears are seeking their fourth NCAA appearance in school history.
