BALTIMORE, MD – Host Johns Hopkins sprinted out to a 21-6 first quarter lead in its Centennial Conference showdown with previously unbeaten Ursinus and never looked back in what eventually become a 52-6 Blue Jay victory at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. Hopkins had eight scoring drives of 60 yards or longer and rolled up 665 yards of total offense against an Ursinus defense that entered the game allowing just 12 points and 226.5 yards per game.
The Blue Jays (4-1, 3-1 Centennial) led just 7-6 after Thomas Garlick hit Ryan Loughlin behind the Blue Jay defense with a 75-yard touchdown pass just 11 seconds after Hopkins had opened the scoring with a six-yard scoring run by Stuart Walters midway through the first quarter.
By the time the period ended, Hopkins had added a 15-yard touchdown reception by sophomore Zac Fernandez and another six-yard touchdown run from Walters to cap scoring drives of 72 and 59 yards. The Fernandez touchdown came on a fourth-and-10 play and was the first of two fourth-down scores the Blue Jays would have on the day.
While the Blue Jays were busy scoring touchdowns on six of their eight first-half touchdowns, the Johns Hopkins defense was taking over on the other side of the ball. Save for the one-play, 75-yard drive touchdown drive on their second possession, five of UC's first eight drives ended in punts and two more ended with Blue Jay interceptions.
The Blue Jay offense added scoring drives that covered 80, 96 and 84 yards in the second quarter to push out to a 42-6 halftime lead; none of the drives took longer than 2:36 or used more than six plays.
A 19-yard strike from junior David Tammaro to sophomore Ryan Hubley - on fourth-and-five – made it 28-6 and Tammaro hit senior running back Tyler Messinger down the middle with a 76-yard touchdown pass five minutes later to make it 28-6. The Blue Jays capped their first-half surge with a lightning-quick six-play, 58-yard drive in the final 90 seconds of the half that Messinger capped with his second touchdown of the game, this one an eight-yard run up the middle.
Ursinus never seriously threatened in the second half after missing a 41-yard field goal attempt on its first possession of the third quarter. The Blue Jays added a one-yard scoring run by Hogan Irwin late in the third quarter and a 22-yard Mike Eberle field goal late in the fourth to account for the final scoring.
Tammaro was 20-of-33 for 360 yards and three touchdowns to lead the 665-yard effort by the Blue Jays. Fernandez was his favorite target with five receptions for 44 yards and the one score. Messinger added three receptions for 99 yards and the one touchdown and added eight rushes for 61 yards and the one score to account for a career-high 160 all-purpose yards.
The Blue Jay , which held Usinus 27 points and 213 yards under its season averages, was led by freshman Robert Fletcher's eight tackles. Sophomore cornerback Macauley Kilbane was strong in the secondary with two tackles, two pass breakups and one interception, while senior Michael Curry added the other Blue Jay interception, which he returned 44 yards.
Garlick was 9-of-23 for 120 yards and one score with 75 of those 120 yards coming on the one play. Samuel Ragland, who entered the game as the Centennial Conference's leading rusher, totaled 63 yards on nine carries with 32 of those 63 coming on one play.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 6 when the Blue Jays travel to Franklin & Marshall for another key Centennial Conference game against the Diplomats (1 pm).
