HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Alfred drove into Bengals' territory on the opening possession, but rookie Darren Wesley (Brooklyn/Erasmus Hall) ended the threat with his first career interception.
  • Buffalo State responded with a 79-yard drive that ate up more than 10 minutes, but could not produce the game's first points, turning the ball over on downs.
  • After forcing a three-and-out, Buffalo State again marched inside Saxons' 20, but again turned the ball over on downs.
  • Alfred responded with an 11-play, 74-yard drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Casey Boston to Jayden Gavidia for a 7-0 lead.
  • Buffalo State got the ball back with just 1:19 remaining in the half and used the hurry-up offense to drive 64 yards on to set up a 28-yard field goal by Justin Simoncelli (W. Seneca/W. Seneca East) as time expired for what would be the Bengals' only points of the day.
  • Buffalo State's first two drives of the second half ended with an interception and a punt, and Alfred finally extended its lead on the first play of the fourth quarter with a 4-yard run by Boston.
  • The Saxons added insurance on their next possession with an 11-play, 79-yard drive that used nearly seven minutes and ended with a second scoring strike from Boston to Gavidia that covered 24 yards with less than six minutes remaining.
  • After Buffalo State fumbled away the ensuing kick return, the Bengals got the ball back just one play later on a forced fumble by Wesley that was recovered by Dupreme Robinson (Brooklyn/South Shore).
  • The Bengals moved into Alfred territory again, but Hoppy was intercepted for the second time of the day in the end zone on a first-and-goal from the 9.
  • Alfred was able to run out the remaining 1:15 to secure the victory.
