Georgetown, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team rode its defense through the first half and watched the offense come to life in the second as the top-ranked Cru rolled to a 44-10 victory over Southwestern on Saturday night in Georgetown. UMHB improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in American Southwest Conference play with its 19th consecutive victory. The loss drops the Pirates to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the ASC on the year.
The Cru defense forced a three-and-out on the game's opening possession and marched 38 yards before John Mowery drilled a 39-yard field goal to make it 3-0 UMHB. Cru defensive end Ajay Fanene forced a Southwestern fumble a few possessions later and Kris Brown scooped it up and raced 25 yards for a touchdown. UMHB missed the extra point, so it was a 9-0 lead with 2:07 left in the first quarter. Southwestern drove to the Cru five-yard line early in the second quarter, but Brazos Fuller forced another fumble and Tevin Jones scampered 93 yards for another score to give UMHB a 16-0 halftime lead.
The Cru offense started to click in the second half as Kyle Jones hit T.J. Josey for a 56-yard scoring strike on the opening drive of the third quarter and added a 59-yard TD toss to Josey on the next possession to stretch the lead to 30-0. Southwestern broke the shutout on Luke Fierst's 43-yard field goal with 10:3 remaining in the third period. Jones then sandwiched touchdown passes of nine yards to Bryce Wilkerson and 61 yards to Demetrius Taylor around Federick Hover's 30-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Daniels to close out the scoring.
The victory also gives Cru coach Pete Fredenburg his 200th career head coaching victory. Fredenburg is now 200-38 as the only coach in the 20-year history of UMHB football. For Fredenburg, 130 of those wins have come in ASC play and 32 more have come in NCAA postseason competition. He is averaging more than 10 victories per season as head coach and now has a winning percentage of 84% with the Cru.
Jones set a school record with 397 passing yards for UMHB and 308 of those came in the second half. Josey caught three passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns and Taylor had four grabs for 99 yards and a score. Markeith Miller ran for 38 yards on just six carries. Reggie Wilson had a game-high ten tackles to lead the Cru defense and Haston Adams added 3.5 tackles for loss.
Hover threw for 227 yards and a TD for Southwestern while running for 24 yards on 17 carries. Daniels had two catches for 59 yards and a TD and Elijah Smith ran for 30 yards on 12 carries. Ben Brockman had seven tackles for the Pirates and Garrett Womack added two sacks and three tackles for loss.
UMHB held Southwestern to 63 yards rushing and 290 yards of total offense while forcing three turnovers. The Cru posted 409 yards of total offense but managed just 12 yards rushing on 18 attempts. UMHB also threw two interceptions and committed ten penalties in the game.
The Cru will return to action with an ASC showdown at nationally ranked Hardin-Simmons (4-0, 3-0 ASC) next Saturday in Abilene. That game will kick off at 1 p.m. at HSU's Shelton Stadium. The winner of the UMHB/Hardin-Simmons game has gone on to win at least a share of the ASC title in every season since UMHB started football in 1998.
