A pair of long touchdowns – the first on an 89-yard punt return by Nick Cummings and the second on an 80-yard run by Antonio Bailey – shifted all of the momentum in favor of The College of Wooster football team, and the Fighting Scots scored 34 unanswered points in the first half en route to a 41-16 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.
Before Wooster's (3-5, 3-4 NCAC) series of big plays unfolded, Kenyon (3-5, 2-5 NCAC) claimed an early 3-0 lead with a Szabi Simo 21-yard field goal opening the afternoon's scoring with 10:16 remaining in the first quarter.
Cummings sparked Wooster from there, and scored the Scots first two touchdowns of the day.
First, Cummings hauled in a 14-yard touchdown strike from Gary Muntean on a third-and-8 play to put Wooster on top 7-3 with 7:11 left in the first quarter. Earlier in the drive, Cummings set up the offense in the red zone knifing through Kenyon's secondary on a 23-yard reception, which moved the ball to the 16.
Then, with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter, Cummings rattled off an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown, putting Wooster up 14-3 with 2:54 left in the stanza. On the return, Cummings had several big blocks from his teammates as he cut across the field before turning loose down the sideline.
Notable, the punt return marked the first for a touchdown by a Scot since Taylor Trout had a 55-yarder in the 2009 Allegheny College contest.
Wooster's series of home-run plays continued in the second quarter, as the Scots needed one play to extend the lead to 20-3 with 13:59 remaining in the half. That play, Wooster's first offensive play since the punt return touchdown, featured Bailey bursting 80 yards right up the middle of the Kenyon defense, marking the longest run by a Scot since Dustin Sheppard went for 81 yards and a touchdown in the 2006 Kenyon contest.
Next, Wooster's ability to make big plays on fourth down led to a 34-3 lead with 1:42 remaining in the half.
First, Brandon Adams capped a 12-play, 69-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-2 play.
On the next drive Gary Muntean floated up a 28-yard touchdown strike to a wide-open Tyson Vogel in the corner of the end zone on a fourth-down play. Earlier on the drive, Muntean completed an 8-yard pass to Russell Boston, a play in which the junior signal-caller set Wooster's single-season passing record.
Kenyon gained some momentum heading into halftime as a 15-yard Thomas Merkle-to-Jibri McLean touchdown strike made it a 34-10 game with :35 left in the half.
Wooster wasted no time seizing the momentum back in the third quarter with Adams darting his way 52 yards for a score to make it a 41-10 Wooster lead with 13:06 left in the stanza.
That's where the score stood until Rob Meagher knifed in from one yard out with 3:36 left in the third to make it a 41-16 game.
From there, Wooster's defense began to take over with Patrick Johnson recording a tackle on the 1-yard line on the ensuing 2-point conversion.
Then, just over midway through the fourth quarter, Zachariah Benjamin made a touchdown-saving tackle on a third-down play with Wooster backed up against the goal line. On the next play, Marcus Bowers and Clark Morin teamed up to stuff the Kenyon ball carrier on the 1-yard line.
Notable, Jack Marousek entered the game on Wooster's offensive possession immediately following the goal-line stand, and helped the Scots navigate out of potential trouble, with a 48-yard scamper on a second-down play.
Wooster's defense came up big again on the next drive when Kenyon tried a deep pass over the middle that Johnson knocked away before Christian Santos came up with the interception on the deflection to seal the game.
The big story of the game was Wooster's run game that went for 300 yards, in large part thanks to the big runs by Adams, Bailey, and Marousek. The rushing output marked the most by Wooster since a 351-yard outing versus Allegheny in 2014.
Muntean completed 16-of-26 throws on the afternoon for 197 yards and a pair of scores, and now has 2,317 yards for the season – 74 more than Richard Barnes had during the 2013 campaign.
One of the big storylines of the game featured Wooster's defensive backfield keeping Kenyon wide receiver Brian Hunca in check. Hunca, one of four receivers in Div. III with over 1,000 yards on the year entering the weekend, was held to 77 yards on five receptions, including just two receptions for 14 yards in the first half.
Defensively Jason Cerniglia, Johnson, and Santos led the charge with eight tackles each.
Merkle completed 33-of-51 throws for 353 yards and a touchdown on the afternoon with Ian Robertson hauling in 12 of those for 155 stripes.
Saxon Justice paced the Lords' defense with 10 tackles.
Next, Wooster hosts Hiram College (2-6, 2-5 NCAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Scots' final home game of the year.
