WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University football team earned its third straight ODAC victory with a 33-28 homecoming win over Guilford Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (5-2, 3-1 ODAC) surpasses the four-win mark for the first time in the Yoder era with its second straight home win over Guilford(4-3, 1-3).
Trailing 28-20 after GC opened the second half with a 10-play, 69-yard drive, SU turned the game around on the strength of turnovers and a huge blocked punt.
The first turnover came at the 8:22 mark of the third as sophomore Thomas Whalen had a strip sack of Karsten Miller at the Quakers 41 which was recovered by Jake Shaffer at the Guilford 37.
Six plays later, Hayden Bauserman hit Leonard Scott for a 24-yard TD pass down the far sideline, and Shenandoah was able to cut the deficit to two, 28-26, following a blocked PAT.
That two-point deficit lasted just seven more plays.
With Guilford punting from its own 34, freshman Deaquan Porter came around the right side of the Quakers line and blocked the punt before picking it up at the 18 and waltzing into the endzone.
The hosts would maintain the lead for the remainder of the contest, but needed a big defensive play to hold onto that advantage.
Miller, who finished his day 24 of 33 for 332 yards, appeared to be headed for the go-ahead touchdown on a 3rd-and-5 scramble from the SU 18, but was met by SU defensive back Bayvon Young at the 1.
Young's crushing hit knocked the ball loose, where he recovered it in the endzone for a touchback.
The hit was also the final play of the game for Miller, who was shaken up and did not return. Joe Farrick replaced him at quarterback and was 6 for 12 for 59 yards and one touchdown.
The Quakers turned the ball over three times after Miller's departure, with two of the three coming in their own territory.
The 20-point second half contrasted a first half in which the two teams combined for 41 points and 597 yards in total offense.
Hornets running back Cedrick Delaney finished his day with 24 carries for 205 yards rushing and two touchdowns along with four catches for 26 yards.
In the second quarter, he also passed Anthony Frates '05 for the all-time rushing lead at SU.
For GC, wideout Tyriek Russell had nine catches for 175 yards and running back Hunter Causey 25 carries for 112.
Micheal Wroble had 12 tackles, Malik Sims 11 and Gladimir Dupalis 10 for the victors.
