BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Shenandoah University earned just its second road victory over Bridgewater since restarting football in 2000 with a 34-10 ODAC win over the Eagles Saturday night at Jopson Field.
Shenandoah (4-2, 2-1 ODAC) matched last season's win total with just its third-ever victory overBridgewater (2-4, 1-2).
The Hornets picked off BC quarterbacks three times, including one that went for a pick-six, to key the big victory.
Leading 3-0 following a Derek Davis 40-yard field goal, senior Malik Sims started the victors first touchdown drive by picking off Eagles quarterback Kyle Edwards at the goal line.
After Sims returned the interception eight yards, the Hornet offense drove 92 yards in 10 plays to take a 10-0 lead.
Sims' classmate, Qlyl Middelijn, finished off the drive by snaring a 5-yard fourth-and-goal pass fromHayden Bauserman for the TD.
The Eagles broke their nearly six-quarter scoreless drought with a 36-yard Anthony Rossi field goal 17 seconds before the halftime gun.
The second half was virtually all Shenandoah.
Taking the second half kick, SU drove 72 yards in 10 plays and finished with a Cedrick Delaney 4-yard TD run.
Three plays later, the score was 24-3 in favor of the Hornets.
Senior Jake Shaffer forced a Malivai Barker fumble at the BC 25 on the Eagles first play from scrimmage following the touchdown. Micheal Wroble recovered for SU, and the offense needed just one play for its next score.
Bauserman hit Michael Ashwell with a 25-yard strike as he crossed into the endzone and the rout was officially on.
Freshman Steve Gebhardt got in on the act with the pick-six – he stepped in front of a Brandon Mautrey pass at the Bridgewater 21 and waltzed untouched into the endzone at the 3:25 mark of the third.
Gebhardt's score, the Hornets first pick-six since the Weldon Gilchrist, Jr. had one versus Gallaudet in the 2015 season opener, made 31-3.
Bridgewater took advantage of an SU fumble to drive 32 yards in four plays to make it 31-10 as the fourth quarter dawned, but could get no closer.
Davis drilled a 28-yard field goal with 11:06 to play to close out the evening's scoring.
Delaney, who is now just 151 yards from the all-time rushing record at Shenandoah, led all players with 174 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Sims had 14 tackles (12 unassisted), a fumble recovery and the interception to lead the defense.
Shenandoah looks for consecutive win No. 3 next Saturday in a 1 p.m. home ODAC contest versus Guilford.
