Williamstown, Mass. - to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 38-13 victory over the Williams College Ephs in the 75th meeting between the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) football foes this afternoon at Farley-Lamb Field. Trinity, ranked No. 6 in New England, improves to 2-0 and keeps pace with Amherst and Tufts at the top of the league standings. Williams falls to 0-2, losing to Trinity for the seventh time in a row and falling behind in the all-time series (37-36-2 in Trinity's favor) for the first time in the 132-year history of the historic rivalry.
Williams threatened early, advancing to the Trinity 12-yard line but Trinity junior LB Liam Kenneally (Reading, Mass.) stopped Eph sophomore RB Noah Sorrento (Norfolk, Mass.) for five-yard loss on 3rd-and-3 and the Ephs' attempts at a fake field goal was unsuccessful. The Bantams answered quickly, as junior QB Sonny Puzzo (West Caldwell, N.J.) found classmate Bryan Vieira (Hull, Mass.) on a 42-yard pass on the very next play from scrimmage to set up a 20-yard field goal by Bantam sophomore Eric Sachse (Jefferson, Mass.) to open the scoring.
On Trinity's next possession, Puzzo raced up the middle on first down for 69 yards to the Williams eight-yard line. After a six-yard scoring pass from Puzzo to senior WR Darrien Myers (North Andover, Mass.) was negated by a penalty, the pair connected on a 21-yard scoring strike on the next play to put the visitors ahead, 10-0, with 4:33 remaining in the first quarter. Trinity senior co-captain Spencer Donahue (Naperville, Ill.) intercepted an Eph pass moments later, and the Bantams capitalized with their second touchdown of the afternoon. Vieira drew a Williams pass interference penalty to bring the ball to the one-yard line and sophomore RB Max Chipouras (Longmeadow, Mass.) plunged in on the next play for a 17-0 Trinity lead with 1:08 left in the opening quarter.
Williams got on the board with 6:25 left in the second quarter, taking advantage of a fumbled punt by the Bantams at the visitors' 30-yard line when freshman QB Jansen Durham (West Friendship, Md.) found sophomore WR Kellen Hatheway (Armonk, N.Y.) on a nine-yard touchdown toss, but only got six points due to a botched PAT. The Bantams were poised to score for a fourth time after a 34-yard Puzzo pass to Vieira but another Trinity fumble gave the ball back to the Ephs only to have Trinity senior DB Archi Jerome (Brockton, Mass.) pick off an Eph pass and returned in into Williams territory. Puzzo found Myers up the middle for 30 yards to the Eph nine-yard line and connected with him for the sixth time in six quarters two plays later to send the teams to halftime with the Bantams ahead, 24-6.
Trinity scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half, once on a 32-yard pass from Puzzo to Vieira and for the second time on a 60-yard run by Chipouras. Williams added its second score on a four-yard touchdown pass from Durham to junior WR Adam Regensburg (Pottstown, Pa.) with 2:24 remaining in the final quarter.
Trinity dominated the line of scrimmage, rushing for 316 yards while the Ephs totaled -10 yards on the ground on 28 attempts and Durham was sacked eight times. Chipouras rushed for 165 yards on 21 carries, while Puzzo ran for 85 yards and was 11-for-17 through the air for 201 more yards. Vieira finished with three catches for 108 yards and Myers caught four passes for 67 yards. Durham was 24-for-37 for 200 yards passing, connecting five times for a team-high 61 yards with junior RB Connor Harris (Memphis, Tenn.) and eight times with Regensburg for 54 yards. Senior CB Yosa Nosameifan (Norwood, Mass.) paced Trinity with six tackles, while Kenneally had two sacks and a forced fumble and all three of his tackles were for losses. First-year DB Ben Anthony (Albany, N.Y.) made a game-high nine tackles for Williams.
