Selinsgrove, Pa. - Nick Palladino broke the Centennial Conference record for career touchdowns and went over 10,000 yards of total offense to lead the Muhlenberg football team to a 33-30 win at Susquehanna.
In a seesaw game that saw eight lead changes, the Mules (4-1, 3-1) took the final lead when Palladino connected with Saucon Valley grad Nick Savant on a 73-yard pass play with 5:44 left in the third. It was the 95th career touchdown responsible for (passing and rushing) by Palladino, breaking the CC mark of 94 that had stood since 1999 (Ron Sermarini of Western Maryland).
Palladino finished the day with 270 yards passing and 28 yards rushing, increasing his school-record total offense mark to 10,199.
Savant recorded his fourth consecutive 100-yard game with 25 carries for 131 yards. Nick Lamb caught five passes for 132 yards and amassed 270 all-purpose yards.
Following Savant's go-ahead score, the Crusaders (2-3, 2-2) took possession at their 41 after a long kickoff return. They managed one first down, but the Muhlenberg defense forced three straight incomplete passes to turn the ball over on downs with 3:26 left to play.
The Mules ran out the remaining time, picking up two third-down conversions - one on a 10-yard run by Palladino and the second when Susquehanna committed an offside penalty.
Muhlenberg opened the scoring with 5:46 left in the first quarter when John Feaster returned an interception 13 yards for his first career touchdown. Two plays later, Susquehanna tied the game back up with a 61-yard touchdown pass, and the back-and-forth game was on.
Lamb's 75-yard touchdown reception early in the second quarter made it 14-10 Mules. After the Crusaders went ahead 20-14 on a TD pass with 3:25 left in the half, Lamb returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.
Palladino ran 16 yards for a touchdown with 6:41 left in the third to make it 27-23. The lead stood until Ryan Ganard returned an interception 24 yards for a score with 8:16 remaining in the fourth.
Muhlenberg faced a fourth-and-1 at its own 20 on the ensuing possession and elected to go for it. Savant ran 7 yards for the first down and caught the winning touchdown pass on the next play.
Feaster and Mickey Kober led the defense with 10 tackles apiece, while Thomas Cosgriff and Mike Luby recorded 2½ tackles for loss apiece.
