RICHMOND, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earned an eight-win season for the first time since 1988 and recaptured the Battle of the Borders Broadsword for the 14th consecutive year with a 64-13 football victory at Earlham College on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Chris Johannigman directed an offense that gained 539 yards of total offense to help the Fightin' Engineers achieve just the fifth season of eight or more wins in school history. Johannigman finished 14-17 through the air for 251 yards and four touchdowns to lead a balanced attack.
Senior Aaron Abbott had an impressive two-way performance that included a key career school record. Abbott became Rose-Hulman's career school record holder with 2,509 receiving yards, snapping the previous mark set by 2011 graduate Reed Eason. He also ranks second all-time with 26 touchdown receptions.
On Saturday, Abbott hauled in six pass receptions for 146 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns on three carries, including a career-best 89-yard touchdown rush.
Sophomore Kevin Dufauchard and sophomore Michael Iacono also contributed to a balanced offensive with strong rushing performances. Dufauchard gained 107 yards on 19 carries, while Iacono rushed for 80 yards on 14 attempts. The Fightin' Engineers rushed for 288 yards and passed for 251 in the victory.
Rose-Hulman's defense was also strong with four interceptions on the day. Wesley Hundley was limited to 10-19 for 107 yards and three interceptions, although he crossed the 100-yard mark in rushing. Junior Kyle Brewer led the Engineer defense with six tackles, including 1.5 tackles-for-loss.
Sophomore Tyler Brutofsky had the key defensive statistics with two interceptions, including a 32-yard return for a touchdown. Sophomore Alec Thompson and sophomore Kacper Kulesza also had interceptions for Rose-Hulman.
Earlham opened the scoring with a 12-play drive, before Rose-Hulman took control of the game. Johannigman connected with Abbott on a 77-yard pass with 7:29 left in the first quarter to knot the score at 7-7. Rose-Hulman took the lead on an 11-yard scoring strike from Johannigman to Jacob Dye.
Rose-Hulman added three second quarter touchdowns to take a 36-7 lead into the halftime locker room. Brutofsky recorded a 32-yard interception return, Dufauchard scored on a five-yard touchdown run, and Johannigman connected with Joe Moehrle on a 34-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds left in the half.
The third quarter also included three touchdowns as Rose-Hulman built a 58-7 lead. Abbott scored on a one-yard run, Iacono had a three-yard touchdown run, and Johannigman hit Luke Kopecky on a 15-yard touchdown pass.
Abbott's 89-yard touchdown run finished Rose-Hulman's scoring with 14:05 left in the game. Earlham answered with the second touchdown strike from Hundley to Marcaus Cooper.
The final 2015 season statistics for Rose-Hulman include five team school records, three individual school records and nine career school records. Highlights include team school records for points scored (426), touchdowns (58), extra points (52), passing efficiency as a team (162.8) and fewest sacks allowed (8).
Individual single-season school records include junior Austin Swenson completing 68.3% of his passes and recording a passing efficiency of 165.8. Senior Craig Larew added another record with 49 extra points made.
Career school records were highlighted by Abbott compiling 218 receptions and 2,509 receiving yards; Alec Fisher with 27 receiving touchdowns; and Swenson with 57 passing touchdowns.
The Fightin' Engineers completed the season at 8-2 and tied for second place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings at 6-2. Rose-Hulman opens the 2016 season at home against Illinois College on Sept. 3.
