Conway, Ark., Nov. 7, 2015 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team had its hopes of a share of a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) championship dashed with a 54-51 loss at Hendrix College Saturday afternoon in Conway, Ark.
Senior kicker Alex Hallwachs had a potential game-tying 30-yard field goal blocked by Spencer Smith as time expired. Hendrix running back Dayton Winn scored on a two-yard run with 1:16 left for the game-winning score.
Hendrix extended its winning streak to three games and improved its overall record to 7-2. The Warriors moved into a tie for first place in the SAA standings with a 6-1 mark. WashU dropped to 5-4, and fell to fifth place in the SAA with a 4-3 record.
WashU piled up a season-high 612 yards of total offense in the loss. Junior quarterback J.J. Tomlin was 41-of-55 for 498 yards and four touchdowns in the loss, and shattered the school and SAA record for passing yards in a game.
Junior wide receiver Hank Childs hauled in 11 catches for a career-high 123 yards and a TD, and went over 1,000 receiving yards for his career. Senior wide receiver Kevin Hammarlund added seven receptions for 90 yards and a TD, while senior wide receiver Matt McCareins had a career-high six catches for 82 yards.
WashU trailed 27-7 after one quarter, but the Bears erupted for 21 second-quarter points to trim the halftime advantage to six (34-28).
Childs hauled in a 21-yard pass from Tomlin with 11:24 left in the second quarter, and then junior running back Austin Smestad scored from two yards out and Hammarlund added a 10-yard TD reception.
In the third quarter, sophomore wide receiver Marcus Ramspott hauled in a 10-yard TD pass form Tomlin with 3:06 left to tie the score at 41-41.
Hallwachs converted a 25-yard chip shot field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 44-41, and then senior running back Cody Ratermann scored from three yards out as WashU built a 51-41 lead with 9:34 left.
Ratermann ran the ball 20 times for 82 yards and two TDs, and went over 1,200 yards for his career.
Senior defensive back Quincy Marting had 10 tackles (eight solo, two assisted), while sophomore defensive back Nick Doctors recorded nine stops and a fumble recovery. Junior defensive lineman Josiah Situmeang was all over the field for Wash with six tackles, two tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a sack.
Winn had 325 yards of total offense (197 rushing, 128 receiving) and four TDs in the win. Hendrix QB Seth Peters was 19-of-25 for 288 yards and three TDs.
WashU closes out the 2015 season at home Saturday, Nov. 14, against the University of Chicago (6-3, 5-2 SAA). Kickoff is set for Noon at Francis Field.
