BLUFFTON, Ohio -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology improved to 5-0 on the season with a dramatic 28-27 football win at Bluffton University on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman John Kirby snagged an interception on a potential game-winning two-point play by Bluffton with 15 seconds remaining in the game to secure the victory.  The Fightin' Engineer defense provided a strong performance overall by forcing five turnovers to help Rose-Hulman improve to 5-0.

Junior Austin Swenson finished 17-30 through the air for 267 yards and three touchdowns to lead a 402-yard offensive performance.  Senior Aaron Abbott had eight receptions for 154 yards and one touchdown.  Freshman Kevin Dufauchard crossed the 100-yard mark on the ground with 114 yards on 31 carries.

Defensively, sophomore Tyler Brutofsky led the Fightin' Engineer defense with eight solo tackles and two interceptions.  Junior Marlin O'Neal and junior Connor Kispert had seven tackles each, with Kispert recording two tackles-for-loss and one sack.

Sophomore Alec Thompson and junior Kevin Nowak also snagged interceptions, and sophomore Jon Poore recovered a fumble punt as the Fightin' Engineer defense forced a total of five turnovers on the day.

Bluffton jumped out to a 7-0 lead after its first drive on a 36-yard touchdown run by Lorenzo McLaurin.  Rose-Hulman knotted the score at 7-7 with 8:48 left in the first quarter on a two-yard scoring run by Dufuchard and the extra point by senior Craig Larew.

Rose-Hulman improved its lead to 14-7 late in the first quarter, when Swenson connected with senior Jacob Dye on a 13-yard touchdown pass.  Bluffton again tied the score at 14-14 on a one-yard run by Devante Thomas-Wright.

Rose-Hulman took a 21-14 lead into the halftime locker room, after a 40-yard touchdown pass from Swenson to Abbott put the Engineers in front. Abbott tied both teammate Alec Fisher and 2011 graduate Reed Eason for the career school record in touchdown receptions at 24 with the catch and run.

The Fightin' Engineers pushed their lead to 28-14 with 6:12 left in the third quarter, when Joe Moehrle made a leaping run into the endzone after a Swenson pass.

Bluffton closed to within 28-21 on a 10-yard pass from Conner Sheehan to McLaurin with 12:47 left in the game.  The Beavers had a chance to tie the game midway through the fourth quarter, but Nowak made a key interception in the endzone to force a touchback and change possession.

Swenson and Abbott hooked up on a 50-yard pass on the next play to sway field position, but the Bluffton defense forced a turnover on downs.  The Beavers marched 88 yards in seven plays on their final scoring drive to close within 28-27 with 15 seconds left in the game on a pass from Sheehan to Raphael Dell.

Bluffton initially brought on the kicking team to try the tying extra point, but after an injury caused a slight delay, the Beavers attempted to go for the win.  Sheehan's pass to the left side of the endzone was intercepted by Kirby.

Bluffton still had a chance for an onside kick, but Kirby grabbed that kick out of the air to clinch Rose-Hulman's fifth straight win.

Rose-Hulman improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in HCAC play with the win, while Bluffton stands 2-3 and 1-2 in conference games.  The Fightin' Engineers host Defiance College next Saturday at Cook Stadium.
