LOS ANGELES — Kwame Do had 231 yards of offense, including 177 yards rushing and one touchdown on 24 carries.
But the Occidental football team had 132 yards in penalties, two costly turnovers, and couldn't stop the run, losing to La Verne 48-27 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers gave up 26 points in the fourth quarter.
The Leopards ran for 414 yards. Travis Sparks led the way with 210 of them and four touchdowns, and Dallas Parent added 162 yards and two touchdowns.
Oxy quarterback Bryan Scott was 28 of 44 for 303 yards with two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, but there were a handful of throws the All-SCIAC quarterback probably wants back. He uncharacteristically missed a couple of deep balls that may have led to touchdowns.
Scott also didn't get a ton of help from his receivers, who dropped too many passes, and was sacked five times.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC play. La Verne goes to 2-1 and 1-0.
Turning Point: With 9:36 left in the third quarter and a 15-13 lead, La Verne's Matt Canlas forced a fumble from Cordell Harris on Oxy's first possession of the half and Travis Sparks followed it up with a 44-yard run on ULV's ensuing drive.
Harris finished with eight catches for 69 yards and one touchdown
Max Gruber had a 44-yard touchdown catch, but also fumbled Oxy's opening kickoff, leading to a La Verne score.
Marcus McDuffie and Zachary Hunter each had eight tackles for Oxy.

Athlete of the Week: Scott was named SCIAC Male Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 15 after throwing for 421 yards and five touchdowns in Oxy's season opener at Puget Sound.
