WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University jumped all over non-league opponent Gallaudet University to earn a 51-6 football victory Saturday night at steamy Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
The Hornets (1-0) scored the initial 31 points of the game to run away from Gallaudet (0-1) and earn their second straight season opening win.
The victory in the home opener is the first for the program since a 49-21 win over Stevenson in the 2011 lid-lifter.
The 51 points scored is just three off the school record of 54 set against Chowan in 2003.
SU opened the game with a six-play, 50-yard drive that took just 2:47 and ended with a Cedrick Delaney 4-yard TD run.
Delaney, who had 95 yards rushing on just 10 carries, sat out the majority of the second half as Shenandoah elected to rest its starters with the game result assured.
Following Delaney's opening score, the SU defense got into the act by picking off Gallaudet QB Ramon Johnson for the first of two times on the night.
Weldon Gilchrist, Jr. picked off Johnson at the SU 20 and raced 80 yards down the far sideline for the pick six.
A Hayden Bauserman to Miles Green 13-yard TD pass came next, and with 2:39 to play in the opening stanza the Hornets had a 21-0 lead.
Bauserman finished his initial start as a college quarterback 13 for 23 for 142 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.
He, like Delaney, sat most of the second half with the hosts holding at least a 25-point lead.
Backup Travis Barton Jr. was 4 for 4 for 22 yards and two TDs in relief of Bauserman.
Bauserman completed his first seven passes of the night.
Shenandoah had 407 yards in total offense, including 243 on the ground. Eight different players had at least one carry on the night and nine players had at least one reception.
The Hornet defense held Gallaudet to just 54 yards rushing and 220 yards in total offense.
Michael Messick had a game-high 13 tackles with Javonte Rose posting one sack and both Messick and Jake Payne a half-sack each.
Josh White had the other interception.
Shenandoah seeks its first-ever 2-0 start next week when it travels to Ferrum for a non-conference contest. This game will be played at Franklin County (Va.) High School.
