BANGOR, Maine – In a showdown for first place in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC), Husson University triumphed over visiting Gallaudet University, 12-6, before 1,879 at the Winkin Complex.
Gallaudet (2-3, 2-1 ECFC) hung around throughout the game even though Husson (4-1, 3-0 ECFC) dominated the statistics. The Bison went down 12-0 with a minute before halftime and the score stood until a halfback option touchdown pass at the 1:47 mark in the fourth quarter placed GU on the scoreboard.
Freshman quarterback Antoine McKinney (Racine, Wis.) handed the ball off to sophomore running back David Jones (Washington, D.C.), who went to the far sideline and threw a 13-yard strike to junior wide receiver Myles Goldberg (Frederick, Md.) in the left corner of the end zone. Junior kicker Eric Setzer (Middletown, Md.) lined up for the point after touchdown but the attempt was blocked.
Gallaudet had one final try to regain possession on the ensuing kickoff. Setzer lined up for an onside kick but instead pooched the ball 28 yards down the field where the Eagles recovered it. GU was out of timeouts as Husson ran out the clock.
The Eagles are off to their best start in school history and now sit alone at the top of the ECFC standings. The loss was a missed opportunity for Gallaudet, who entered the game tied for first place in the ECFC with Husson and Castleton State College. Mount Ida College defeated Castleton State, 26-21, in another conference game today. Gallaudet is now tied with Castleton and Mount Ida for second place with 2-1 conference records. This is only the second ECFC loss for the Bison in the past 12 conference games.
GU was held to 32 rushing yards in the first half as the first five possessions for the Bison ended in Setzer punts. The Bison finished the game with 155 offensive yards (68 yards on the ground) while the Eagles rolled up 366 yards (215 yards on the ground). Gallaudet was 1 of 11 on third down opportunities as Husson held a 15-9 edge in first downs and the Eagles made 3 of 6 attempts on fourth down.
McKinney finished the game 4 of 7 passing for 54 yards as Jones caught two passes for 26 yards and ran the ball seven ties for 42 yards. Junior fullback BJ Flores (Raymondville, Texas) was limited to nine yards on eight carries.
