St. Lawrence's Defense Dominant in 31-6 Win Over Rochester

More news about: Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Mike Lefflbine threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead St. Lawrence University to a 31-6 victory over the University of Rochester in Division III college football at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Lefflbine threw a 14-yard TD pass to Chris Shannon late in the second quarter and a 13-yarder to Mitch Gallagher early in the third quarter as the Saints build a 24-0 lead.

St. Lawrence won its third straight and improved to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the Liberty League. Rochester, which has lost two straight, is 2-2 overall, 0-2 in the Liberty League.

The Saints totaled 341 yard in offense – 103 on the ground and 238 through the air. Lefflbine completed 25 of 37 passes with no interceptions. He was sacked three times. Maurice Irby led he Saints on the ground with 61 yards on 17 carries.

Rochester produced 201 yards in offense – 149 on the ground and 52 in the air. Myles Allen led all rushers with 80 yards on nine carries. He ran 57 yards around left end for Rochester's only touchdown – this one with 10:17 left in the quarter.

SLU marched 47 yards in eight plays late in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. A 10-yard run by Lefflbine and a 12-yard pass to Gallagher set up a 22-yard run by Irby down the sideline. That gave the Saints first-and-goal at the Rochester three. UR'S Ugwu Okeke Ewo broke up two passes in the end zone for Gallagher, sandwiched around a two-yard pass to Sean Richardson that put the ball on the one. On fourth down, Lefflbine dove up the middle for the opening score.

In their second scoring drive, the Saints faced only one third down situation – this one a third-and-12 from the Rochester 20 after two holding penalties vs. SLU and an offsides penalty against Rochester. On fourth down, Andrew Carvalho hit a 36-yard field goal, with his kick hitting the crossbar and falling over for three points.

Rochester tried some trickery to get back in it after the field goal. After a three-and-out, a fourth down pass out of the punt formation fell incomplete. St. Lawrence took over at the R 24 and scored in three plays, including back to back passes of 11 yards and 14 yards to Shannon.

Early in the third, Lefflbine capped a four-play, 29-yard drive with a 13-yard TD pass to Gallagher. The Yellowjackets got pinned in their own end late in the fourth when Brodie Corliss' punt was downed at the six. Rochester punted and SLU's Jaime Holley-Grisha returned the putn eight yards to the 30. Backup quarterback Zane Fish ran 18 yards as part of a four-play 30-yard drive that ended with his three-yard TD run for a 31-6 lead with 2:50 left in the game.

Defensively for SLU, Chyron Brown-Wallace had nine tackles, three for loss of 16 yards, and 1.5 sacks. Dillon Knight had eight tackles, including half a sack. Holley-Grisha and Joe Battaglia recovered fumbles. Leondre Simmon had an interception and one pass breakup.

For Rochester, Thomas Marone had 12 tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss. R.J. Borgolini had 10 tackles.
