More news about: Ursinus

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Ursinus College football team scored the first 35 points of the game on its way to a 42-13 win over McDaniel Saturday afternoon at Gill Stadium, marking the second straight season that the Bears have started 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference.

Junior fullback Nick Pustizzi (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Shalick) scored the first touchdown of his career on a 2-yard run in the third quarter.

The defensive unit again came up with three takeaways, moving their turnover margin to +13. Junior linebacker James Roccograndi (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) had a team and game-high 10 tackles.

For McDaniel, freshman running back John Chamberlin rushed for two scores, including one as the final buzzer sounded.

After both teams traded drives, Ursinus set up its first score on a punt block, as the Bears got the ball on the Green Terror 8-yard line with 6:43 left. Three plays later, Monahan found junior wideout Nick Lundholm (Barrington, N.J./Haddon Heights) in the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 5:54 left in the first.

On Ursinus' next drive, the Bears went 75 yards in 14 plays, ending with a 7-yard scoring run from Kelly that ate up 6:57 off the clock for a 14-0 lead.

A Max DeNardo interception, his second in as many weeks, ended McDaniel's next possession and gave the Bears the ball at the Ursinus 27. Six plays later, Ursinus scored on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Monahan to Raymond for a 21-0 lead with 5:03 left.

The last drive of the second quarter saw McDaniel drive down to the Ursinus 34, before junior defensive back Matt Glowacki (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford) intercepted the ball at the goal line and ran it back to the Green Terror 35 yard line to end the first half.

Ursinus increased its lead to 28-0 in the third quarter, as on its first drive of the second half, the Bears went 32 yards in seven plays ending on a 2-yard run by Pustizzi with 10:16 left. The Bears went up 35-0 with 4:20 left when Monahan threw a 14-yard touchdown pass from Monahan to senior wide receiver Ron Armstead (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic).

McDaniel got on the board with 13:41 left in the game when Chamberlin scored his first touchdown on a 1-yard run.

Ursinus scored its final touchdown with 5:08 left when Paul ended a 91-yard, seven-play drive on a 9-yard touchdown run.

The Green Terror got its final touchdown as time expired on a 1-yard run by Chamberlin.

The Bears host Moravian on Saturday, its final game before the league wide bye week.

The Bears, now in a first place tie with Johns Hopkins as the two lone undefeated teams in the conference, used the ground game on Saturday as the Bears rushed for 260 yards on 42 carries.

Ironically, it was the first time the Bears have run for over 200 yards as a team since last year's win over the Green Terror (1-3, 0-3 Centennial).

Ursinus was paced by sophomore running back Corey Kelly (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) who ran for 145 yards on 24 carries and a score. Senior tailback Taylor Paul (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) just missed rushing for 100 yards, as he finished with 98 yards on 13 carries.

Senior quarterback Kevin Monahan (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown) completed 50 percent of his passes (11-for-22) for 151 yards and three scores, including a 56-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Matt Raymond (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts). Monahan threw TD passes of 8, 56, and 4 yards in the win.
