Sophomore Dan Andrews (Rochester, NY/Franklin) rushed for 138 yards on 25 carries with one TD for The College at Brockport Football team but an early two-touchdown deficit proved to be too much to overcome as Utica College scored a 42-28 win Saturday night in Charles A. Gaetaino Stadium in Utica.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in Empire 8 conference play while Utica improves to 4-0 for just the second time in school history and 2-0 in Empire 8 games.
Utica scored three touchdowns on its first three possessions and led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. Brockport scored twice in the second quarter and trailed 28-21 at the halftime intermission.
The Golden Eagles scored in the closing seconds of the third quarter and had a chance to tie the score early in the fourth quarter but the first Brockport drive of the quarter stalled just inside Utica territory. After a good defensive stand, Utica punted all the way to the Brockport 1-yard line pinning the Golden Eagles deep in their own end of the field with 10:30 left to play.
Brockport moved the ball all the way to midfield but another drive stalled and the Golden Eagles punted the ball away with 7:44 on the clock.
The Brockport defense held again, forcing another Utica punt but the ball was downed inside the 10-yard line pinning the Golden Eagles deep again.
Taking over with four minutes left, an interception on the second play of the drive gave the ball back to Utica and essentially ended the game. The Pioneers scored again to regain the two touchdown lead.
Another interception near the Utica 20-yard line with just over a minute left sealed the win for the Pioneers.
Andrews had 138 yards and Eric Malave (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) finished with nine catches and 83 yards. Quarterback Chase Venuto (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) was 20-for-37 for 220 yards. Defensively, Jake Brickler (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had 14 tackles including 11 solo stops while Anthony Bianchi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) and Matt Szymanski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) each had eight tackles for the Golden Eagles.
