SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University football team took its first loss of the season on Saturday night, falling to No. 4 Wesley College, 43-5, under the lights at Sea Gull Stadium.
Junior linebacker Nick Anzallo had 13 tackles to pace the Salisbury defense against a balanced Wesley offense which ran for 161 yards and passed for 319. The Salisbury offense saw sophomore Aarron Moore rush for 51 yards as the Sea Gulls ran for 173 yards in the game.
The Wolverines (2-0) got on the scoreboard first, covering 53 yards in eight plays, capped by Jamar Baynard's 1-yard plunge for the score. It was the first of three scores for the Wesley tailback.
Anzallo made his presence known on the first Wesley drive, recording three tackles, while fellow middle linebacker, sophomore Shane Marvel made four tackles on the drive. Marvel would finish with eight stops in the game.
The Sea Gulls (1-1) would see a trio of three-and-out possessions on offense in the first quarter, with Wesley finding the end zone again, but failing to convert the point after.
Salisbury would strike back, taking possession with 1:39 left in the first quarter. On the first play of the drive, junior quarterback John Dunbar went to the left, and kept the ball, scampering down the left sideline for a 60-yard gain, Salisbury's longest play of the night, setting the Sea Gulls up at the Wesley 15-yard line.
Sophomore Ryan Kolb took the next rush 9 yards, to the Wesley 6-yard line, but the Sea Gulls could go no further, taking a 27-yard field goal from sophomore Zak Osborne, to cut the Wesley lead to 13-3, moments into the second quarter.
The Wolverines would score twice in the second period to stretch their lead to 27-3 at halftime.
The Wesley lead grew to 40-3 before Salisbury would get its final points of the night, coming on a snap over the head of Wolverine punter Nick Miller and out of the end zone for a safety with 9:22 left in the game.
Senior Kyle Hamby had a career-high eight punts in the game for a 43.4-yard average, with three of the boots being more than 50 yards.
Senior nose guard Nick Ochoa and junior lineman Josh Danko each finished with 10 tackles, while Danko recovered one fumble in the game.
The Sea Gulls have a bye week before their next contest at Buffalo State College on September 27. The game is the first Empire 8 Athletic Conference game of the year for Salisbury, and is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
