Brockport Pounds Oberlin in Season Opener

More news about: Brockport

Junior Eric Malave (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) caught a school-record 13 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown leading The College at Brockport Football team to a convincing 45-10 victory over Oberlin College Saturday in the 2014 season opener on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.

Oberlin (0-1) opened the scoring on its second drive of the game midway through the first quarter when Brockport was forced to punt from its own end zone and gave the Yeomen great field position on Brockport's 24 yard line. After four consecutive runs, Oberlin quarterback Lucas Poggialli threw a scoring pass to Justin Cruz to give the Yeomen a 7-0 lead.

Brockport wasted little time answering as freshman Nick Vallone (Depew, NY/St. Mary's) returned the ensuing kickoff 62 yards and Malave caught consecutive passes with the second going 34 yards for the touchdown.

A long drive at the end of the first quarter for Brockport advanced the ball all the way to the Oberlin three-yard line and two plays later, Tyler Perna (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) kicked a 26-yard field goal which gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good at 10-7.

Brockport extended the lead with the next drive of the quarter as Ty Stoldt (Alden, NY/Alden) took over at quarterback and engineered a quick five-play drive capped by a nine-yard Dan Andrews (Rochester, NY/Franklin) TD run.

Brockport also scored on its next possession as Stoldt capped an 11-play drive capped with a seven-yard run for the 24-7 advantage.

On the first drive of the second half, Oberlin stopped the Brockport drive and forced a punt but senior Darrel Flores (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) forced a fumble on the punt return and recovered the ball on the 33-yard line.

Four plays later, Andrews broke free for an 18-yard scoring run giving Brockport a commanding 31-7 lead.

Oberlin answered with a 14-play drive but the Brockport defense kept the Yeomen out of the end zone stopping the drive at the 10-yard line and Oberlin settled for a 27-yard field goal.

The fourth quarter started with a pair short drives both capped by touchdown passes from Stoldt to senior Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster). The first was a 14-yard play and the second was an 82-yard catch and run.

Brockport finished with 528 total yards with three quarterbacks combining for 371 yards through the air. Stoldt finished with 179, Bonsell had 153 and sophomore Mike Torrillo (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) finished the game with 39 yards on his only pass late in the fourth quarter.

Malave led all receivers with his 131 yards and 13 catches. The 13 receptions broke the school record of 12 catches in a game set by Felipe Diaz who had 12 catches vs. TCNJ in 2009 and tied by Jake Spalik with 12 receptions against Montclair in 2012.

Mrozek finished with 106 yards on three catches and two TDs. Sophomore James Rupp (Sayville, NY/Sayville) led the defense with 11 tackles and fellow sophomore Jake Brickler (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had 10 tackles including a team leading six solo stops.
