Spartans Victorious Over #21-Ranked Coe

More news about: Dubuque

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The battle of the unbeatens in Iowa Conference play on Saturday was reduced by one on Saturday. The University of Dubuque Spartans (4-2 overall, 3-0 in IIAC) scored early and often as they captured the contest over the #21-ranked Coe College Kohawks on their homecoming by a 38-14 score. It was the Kohawks first loss of the season and dropped them to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in IIAC action.

Intermittent light rain didn't slow the Spartan offense and after less than three minutes into the game, UD scored on a 51 yard touchdown pass from Bryan Bradshaw to Tyler Rutenbeck for the first score in the game. Seven minutes later the host Kohawks scored on a two yard run to knot the game at 7-7. After one quarter the game was tied 7-7. The second quarter was all Spartans as Chris Bagley scored at 13:46 on a 26 yard pass from Bradshaw on a one play drive. Ten minutes later UD used a nine play, 79 yard drive to stretch their lead on a 28 yard pass to Bagley from Bradshaw 21-7. The Spartans got the ball back with time running down in the first half and scored with 1:09 left on a 65 yard pass to Tyler Rutenbeck from Bradshaw to increase the Spartan lead 35-7 at halftime.

The quieted Kohawks crowd was left with not much to cheer about in the second half after the Spartans scored at 8:49 of the third quarter on a four yard catch from Bradshaw to Rutenbeck. It was Rutenbeck's third touchdown catch of the afternoon and he would finish with four catches for 165 yards. Kicker Curtis Prull added a 35 yard fieldgoal with 1:31 left of the third as UD led 38-7. The Kohawks added a touchdown at 13:13 of the final quarter of play on a 13 yard run which ended the scoring on Saturday 38-14.

UD's defense held Coe to just 88 yards of passing as the Spartans Bradshaw finished with 17-26 pass attempts for 311 yards in the air and a five touchdown day. Bagley caught four passes for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the ground, Kyle Acker dominated the Coe defense with 28 rushes for 151 yards. Acker would carry defenders along with him to end the afternoon with an average of 5.4 yards a carry.

Blaine Snitker led the Spartans defense once again with 10 tackles as teammates Dustin Sorrentino finished with nine tackles and Darren Myles added eight in the victory. The defense held the top-ranked Kohawks to 11 first downs on the afternoon and a total offense of just 211 yards. UD finished the day with 520 yards of offense and 23 first downs. Possession time favored the Spartans 39:15 to the Kohawks 20:45.

The Spartans host Wartburg College next Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. The Knights are 5-1 overall, 3-0 in IIAC after they beat Luther 24-21 in Decorah "live on KCRG 9.2" on Saturday. The Knights lone loss was to Bethel by a 17-30 margin.
