DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College sophomore quarterback Aaron Wilmer threw for 282 yards and a school-record six touchdowns as the Aggies jumped out to a 42-0 lead and finished with a 42-21 home triumph over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) foe Albright College.
The win was the third straight for Delaware Valley as the four-time defending conference champions improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in league action. Albright dropped its second in a row as it fell to 3-2 and 2-2. Both teams have a bye next week.
Wilmer completed 13 of 20 passes, including scoring tosses of 79, 7, 3, 5, 66 and 33 yards. That broke the Aggie record of five touchdown passes that was held by five different players, including Wilmer as he reached that mark in a win over Stevenson University last year. Wilmer also added 67 yards on four carries as the offense finished the day with 513 total yards.
Junior wideout Lewis Vincent was at the receiving end of the two long touchdowns as he finished the game with five catches for 203 yards. The yardage was the fifth-highest, single-game total in school history.
The Lions took the opening kickoff and drove to the Delaware Valley 20-yard line where a 37-yard field goal attempt went wide left. After a one-yard run on the Aggies' first offensive play, Wilmer hit Vincent on a post pattern and Vincent went the distance for the 79-yard score and a 7-0 Delaware Valley lead six minutes into the game.
After an Albright punt, Wilmer let his running do the damage as he raced 51 yards to the Lion 21-yard line. Five plays later, he hit freshman tailback Alquann Jones out of the backfield for a seven-yard touchdown. Brandon Snyder added the extra point for the 14-0 advantage with 4:22 left in the opening quarter.
Albright went three-and-out on its next possession and Delaware Valley took over at the Lion 44. The offense drove to the three-yard line before Wilmer hit a wide-open Rasheed Bailey in the end zone and a 21-0 advantage with 12 seconds left in the first.
Wilmer's fourth scoring strike went to Chris Ruiz from five yards out just four minutes into the second half. The drive was keyed by two big plays from Vincent as he hauled in back-to-back receptions of 24 and 21 yards. It also marked the 11th straight, first-half possession that the Aggie offense found the end zone as they scored on their final drive of the opening stanza two weeks ago at Stevenson, and on all six, first-half drives in last week's win over FDU-Florham.
Wilmer tied the school mark with 9:54 remaining in the third quarter as he found Vincent for a 66-yard bomb. He broke the record and ended his day three minutes into the fourth when he scrambled away from trouble and found Ruiz in the back corner of the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown and a 42-0 advantage.
With Delaware Valley going to its bench, the Lions scored three times in a seven-minute span in the fourth quarter. They went on a 10-play, 79-yard drive that was capped by backup quarterback Adam Galczynski's eight-yard touchdown pass to Scott Pillar with 9:06 on the clock. They then forced a fumble at the Aggie 33-yard line and Galczynski hit Daniel McNair from 18 yards out with 7:11 to go. Albright's defense then found the end zone with 2:32 remaining as Matt Filosa recovered a fumble and scored on a 14-yard return.
Kyle Schuberth paced the Delaware Valley ground attack with 80 yards on 15 carries. Ruiz finished with four catches for 52 yards and the two scores. Defensively, John Robinson notched nine tackles while Dwayne Shaw had six stops and one sack. Brian Carter, Shawn Miller and Chris Vega notched interceptions.
Albright starting quarterback TJ Luddy completed 14 of 25 passes for 140 yards and one interception. Galczynski was 6-for-12 for 92 yards, two scores and one interception. Running back Ty Hughes carried the ball 21 times for 100 yards while Pillar grabbed nine passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. Levi Myers had eight tackles in the loss.
