BANGOR, Maine (Oct. 29, 2011) – The Maritime football team defeated Husson University, 34-13, on the road Saturday at the Eagles' Winkin Sports Complex. The win is the Privateers' seventh-straight and improves their record to 7-1 on the season (5-0 ECFC), while Husson falls to 0-8 (0-5 ECFC).

Senior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) led the way for Maritime with a game-high 162 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast) and sophomore Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles) scored the other two touchdowns on the day for the Privateers and senior Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) converted two field goals from 41 yards and 28 yards to round out the scoring. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) was 4-for-10 in completions for 73 yards, hooking up with Jean three times for 62 yards.

On defense, junior Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and senior Jonathan Carberry (New York, N.Y./New Utrecht) both had a team-high seven tackles apiece. One of Lashers was for a loss of one yard. Junior Thomas Boney (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian) had the Privateers' only sack of the day in the second quarter for a loss of seven yards. Senior Sean Wiggers (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) and freshman Zach Spector (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./St. Anthony's Prep.) both had interceptions in the game and junior Jeremy Garcia (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) had a game-high three pass breakups.

Maritime got on the board first on the opening drive of the game, when Jean rushed 25 yards to the end zone and Leary's PAT was good to put the Privateers ahead, 7-0, at 12:28. The drive was just five plays and 63 yards long. Leary's first field goal, the 41-yarder, came with 51 seconds remaining in the first quarter and put Maritime up 10-0.

The Privateers scored 10 more in the second quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Leary and a six-yard run by Spanopoulos that gave Maritime a 20-0 lead with 13 seconds remaining in the half. However, Husson found some life, as freshman Godfrey Taylor returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown and the Eagles scored a quick seven points to go into the locker room down just 20-7.

In the second half, Spanopoulos ran home a five-yard run at 9:47 of the fourth quarter to put Maritime ahead 27-7. Bigham took over at fullback and ran in a one-yard TD to close out the Privateers' scoring. Husson added one more touchdown on a 12-yard pass from junior Kash Keezer to senior Jack Hersom.

Maritime picked up 381 yards of offense on Saturday and held the Eagles to just 183.

The Privateers return to action next Saturday, Nov. 5, in a clash of undefeated ECFC teams when Norwich University (6-3 overall, 6-0 ECFC) visits Reinhart Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
