Moravian University football coach Jeffrey Long is stepping down from his position leading the Greyhounds' program on January 16 to become the defensive coordinator at Division I FCS Bucknell.
"We want to thank Coach Long for leading the Greyhound football program for the past three seasons," stated athletic director and women's basketball coach Mary Beth Spirk. "We wish Jeff and his family nothing but the best. Continued success to Jeff as he moves onto Bucknell to take another step on his coaching journey. A search for our next head football coach will begin immediately."
On Jan. 20, Moravian named Mike Kane interim football coach, as part of its national search.
Long served as the Hounds' head coach for three seasons since being hired in February 2023, and he guided the Greyhounds to a 13-18 record including a 9-9 slate in Landmark Conference action. Long's 2024 squad posted a 7-4 overall mark and defeated Shenandoah, 35-14, to capture the Cape Charles Bowl title in the Chesapeake Challenge Bowl Series between the Landmark and Old Dominion Athletic Conferences. The winning season was the first for the Blue & Grey since 2015, and the program's first postseason victory since 2010.
During his tenure, Long had 24 student-athletes earn spots on the Landmark All-Conference teams including eight first team honorees, 12 second team selections and four honorable mention picks to go along with three D3football.com All-Region 2 honorees. He also had 62 student-athletes earn a spot on the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll and nine players named to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society. Long was selected to the American Football Coaches Association 35 under 35 Coaching Leadership Program in 2024.
Moravian will begin a national search for its next head football coach immediately.
