Fitchburg State football coach Scott Sperone has resigned his position. Sperone, a former assistant coach at WPI, was hired as head coach of the Falcons football team in January 2020.

Mark Sullivan, the Falcons' offensive coordinator, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Fitchburg State is 1-4 this season, with a season-opening win against Dean. The Falcons were 0-10 last season.

In a letter to players announcing his departure, Sperone said, "I am confident you will be successful in whatever you choose to do in life because you have proven you will not quit, and will fight through the tough times. The process to become a championship football team takes time, effort and the belief that this program will become a champion. Embrace the grind and understand that if being a college football player were easy, then everyone would do it. Continue to work to become the best student, the best football player and the best person you can be, every day."

Fitchburg State athletic director Matthew J. Burke said the department will work to make the transition as smooth as possible for the university's student-athletes. "We are committed to supporting our students on the playing field as well as the classroom," Burke said.
