Tufts, St. Vincent and Allegheny each snapped multi-season losing streaks while Rose-Hulman took another game into multiple overtimes in Saturday's Week 3 action in Division III football.
Tufts overcame 363 yards of total offense from Chase Rosenberg and the Jumbos snapped a 31-game losing streak by defeating Hamilton 24-17 in the teams' season opener.
The win was Tufts' first since the season opener in 2010, also a win vs. Hamilton. The NESCAC plays an eight-game schedule, faces no out-of-conference foes and does not accept invitations to the NCAA Division III football playoffs. The loss was the 13th in a row for the Continentals and the first under new head coach Dave Murray, former longtime coach of Alfred.
Tufts took a 24-10 lead with a touchdown and two-point conversion two minutes into the fourth quarter and kept Hamilton out of the end zone until Rosenberg hit Patrick Donadio for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds left. Tufts covered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
Derek Yanosick had four receptions for 116 yards in the second half and Morgan Porter kicked three field goals to lift St. Vincent past Case Western Reserve 23-20 and end the Bearcats' 23-game losing streak. Morgan's third field goal came from 31 yards out with 9:19 left to help St. Vincent retake the lead and the Bearcats' defense held Billy Beecher to 1-for-5 passing with an interception and a sack the rest of the way to secure the win. The last win for St. Vincent came in the 2011 regular season finale vs. Bethany. The Bearcats lost an ECAC bowl game at Lebanon Valley and went 0-10 the next two seasons.
Allegheny snapped an 11-game losing streak and slowed Hiram's early-season run by taming the Terriers 24-21. Jon Nigro was 23-for-32 passing for 278 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Gators in the win. Allegheny rallied from deficits three times in the win.
For the second week in a row, a game ended on a 10-second runoff. But this time it was when a coach drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Texas Lutheran sealed a 38-32 win vs. Louisiana College when Wildcats coach Dennis Dunn ran on the field with six seconds left (follow link for photo), drawing the infraction and ending the game. The Wildcats were at the TLU 5-yard line.
Washington and Jefferson became the third Division III team to reach the 700-win plateau, as the Presidents downed an old rival in beating Carnegie Mellon 48-30. Pete Coughlin had a career day in completing 26 of 38 passes for 333 yards and five touchdowns. Mount Union and Wittenberg are the other Division III football teams with 700 wins.

Bryan Peterson had just a crazy afternoon at quarterback for Whitworth, going 59-for-83 passing with six touchdowns and zero interceptions as the Pirates outdueled La Verne 50-48. His 59 completions are a Division III record, as are the 83 passes without an interception. The passes without an interception record was held by D3football.com All-American Justin Peery of Westminster (Mo.) in 1998.
William Livingston was 27-for-44 passing for 469 yards and seven TDs for La Verne, but was picked off twice. John Lilly had an incredible eight catches for 274 yards and six touchdowns in the loss.
For Rose-Hulman, it was just another day at the office, as the Fightin' Engineers came back from a 28-7 deficit and defeated Hanover 48-42 in two overtimes. Austin Swenson set a single-game school record for pass completions by finishing 44-for-64 through the air for 467 yards and four touchdowns. Rose-Hulman is now 3-0.
Wilkes ran 113 plays on offense, breaking the Division III record for a regulation game, but would have needed to make a few plays on defense as Delaware Valley defeated the Colonels 54-35. The regulation record for plays was 112, set by Gustavus Adolphus in 1985. The overall record is 114, set just last week by Rose-Hulman. Chris Smallwood had 20 carries for 213 yards and six TDs for the Aggies, including scores of 34, 37, 42 and 49 yards.
Griffin Neal and the Concordia-Moorhead offense dominated the clock in Collegeville, Minn., converting 11 of 18 third downs and picking up two more on fourth down to keep the SJU offense off the field in a 23-14 win.
Stevenson started off 3-0 for the first time in program history as Cortez Taylor caught two touchdown passes and the Mustangs overcame a 10-for-23 day with three interceptions by Daniel Williams to defeat Lebanon Valley 20-14. The Flying Dutchmen have started the season 0-3 after winning the MAC automatic bid in 2013.
Ursinus improved to 3-0, scoring 21 points in the third quarter and then holding off Franklin and Marshall to defeat the Diplomats in overtime, 31-24. The Bears, who trailed by as many as 10, sealed the win when Max DeNardo intercepted Matt Magarity on the third play of the overtime possession to end the game.
