Southwestern had plenty to celebrate as the Pirates
won their belated season opener and picked up the first win in the
revived program's history. |
Rose-Hulman survived a three-overtime battle and defeated Illinois College 74-68 in a game that tied the record for the highest scoring game in Division III history.
Greg Lee scored on a 45-yard touchdown run with 1:34 to go in regulation and added a 3-yard score in the third extra frame to seal the win for the Fightin' Engineers, who improve to 2-0.
The game tied the four-overtime battle between Hartwick and Utica, won 72-70 by Hartwick in 2007.
Austin Swenson threw seven touchdown passes for Rose-Hulman, completing 37 of 59 for 603 yards. His counterpart, Michael Bates, was 42-for-73 for 535 yards and six scores.
Bryan Hicks completed just 14 of 37 passes but they went for 185 yards and four touchdowns in the wins, while the Southwestern defense picked off Derrick Bernard four times, one of which the Pirates converted into a touchdown to open the third quarter. Nik Kelly had a pair of interceptions and recovered a fumble in the win.
"We never gave up," said Hicks. "It came down to us going out and playing the best we can. We knew if we did that we would have a chance to win."
Southwestern revived its program last season and went 0-10. Last week's game with Hardin-Simmons was called off midway through because of weather. It was Southwestern's first win since November 1950.
Josh Williams ran for 300 yards and had three catches for 49 yards as Elmhurst bounced back from a Week 1 loss to win at Olivet 33-27. Williams, the brother of Elmhurst's Gagliardi Trophy-winning running back Scottie Williams, set the school mark in the process.
Cortland State had some end-game issues for the second week in a row. Set up fourth and goal from the Brockport 1-yard line with three seconds left, Cortland shot itself in the foot, committing a false start penalty. That incurred a 10-second runoff and Brockport came away with the 17-14 victory. Brockport had taken the lead with a 19-yard field goal from Tyler Perna with 2:02 left.

Matthew McDaniels ran for 174 yards and a touchdown but was just 3-for-9 passing and threw an interception as Coast Guard defeated archrival Merchant Marine 42-31 in the Secretaries' Cup.
Berry was unable to repeat Southwestern's feat. The Vikings took LaGrange to two overtimes but failed on the two-point conversion in the second extra frame to fall 28-27. Berry is still looking for its first win in program history.
Sam Sura set the school record for yards with 281 on 32 carries as St. John's rolled over UW-Eau Claire 31-7.
Rowan jumped out to a 14-0 lead with two touchdowns within 11 seconds of each other in the first quarter and the post-Melikke Van Alstyne Framingham State running game picked up just 88 yards overall as the Profs defeated the Rams 31-21.
Max Cepeda rushed for 104 yards on only seven carries and Muhlenberg cruised past Franklin and Marshall 42-7. The Mules outgained the Diplomats 434-169. Lemar Johnson threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 87 yards and two more scores as Morrisville State outlasted Hartwick 43-40 to improve to 2-0. Johnson hit Anthony Mella for a 22-yard touchdown for the game-winner with 40 seconds to play.
Utica gave up the first 16 points of the game but came back to score the last 23 and rallied to defeat Union 23-16. Jon Cappotelli made 17 tackles and Juwan Wilson had 14 stops with two pass deflections for Utica, which was held to 95 yards in the first half but kept the Dutchmen to 101 yards in the second half.
Matt Pawlowski threw six touchdowns to outduel Methodist quarterback Max Reber as his Guilford Quakers defeated the Monarchs 52-20. Tory Mack picked up 252 yards on just 17 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead Western Connecticut to a 58-0 win vs. Nichols.
Anderson had Concordia (Mich.) on the ropes but the Ravens fell in the final minutes, losing 23-18. It's Anderson's 28th consecutive loss.
Mike Barthelemy was held to 45 yards on 20 carries but quarterback Zak Thrasher picked him up to the tune of 316 yards passing and three TDs as Millsaps won 30-22 at Mount St. Joseph. Rashad Sims caught a 73-yard touchdown pass and Barthelemy caught five balls for 54 yards and a score for the Majors.
