BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 13/14 College at Brockport football team has two straight home games coming up, starting with Morrisville State this Saturday.
DATE – TIME: October 14, 2017 – 1 p.m.
LOCATION: Brockport, N.Y. – Bob Boozer Field
The Golden Eagles are 5-0 on the season so far, and are coming off a bye week after beating SUNY Cortland 52-38 two weeks ago. That game gave Brockport their first bit of adversity this year, as they trailed by 11 points at the half, and were seemingly unable to stop the Red Dragon passing attack. That changed quickly in the second half, with the Green and Gold opening the half by outscoring Cortland 35-3, taking a commanding lead in the game. QB Joe Germinerio had one of his best outings of the season, throwing for three touchdowns and running for three more.
Brockport allowed just five yards rushing in that contest, and they currently rank fifth in the nation in rushing defense, allowing just 51 yards-per-game on the ground. The linebacker unit has played a huge part in that success, as seniors Matt Szymanski (36 tackles) and Nathaniel Keith III (33 tackles) rank first and second on the team in tackles.
The Golden Eagles also rank in the top ten in a few other categories, including time of possession (4th), 3rd down conversion percentage (4th), and total offense (8th). Those total offense number have come primarily from the tandem of Germinerio, who ranks 13th in the country with 345.2 total yards-per-game, and running back Justin Morrison, who ranks 18th with 140.6 rushing yards-per-game. DaQuan Hubbard has been the down field threat, averaging over 24 yards-per-catch, while Joseph Ortiz has consistently gotten his hands on the ball, leading the conference with 6.8 receptions-per-game.
This will be the 11th all-time matchup between Brockport and Morrisville, and the Golden Eagles currently hold an 8-2 edge in the series. They've won the last five contests dating back to 2011, including a dominant 24-point victory a season ago that saw the defense find the end zone twice with a pair of first quarter scoop and scores.
A win this week would tie for the team's best start since 2003, when they also began the season 6-0, and went on to host the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs. The best start in program history was in 2000 when they went a perfect 8-0 in the regular season before falling in their NCAA opening round matchup.
Brockport will be back at home next weekend when they welcome Hartwick College to Bob Boozer field for a 4 p.m. homecoming matchup. They'll then go on the road to Buffalo State before hosting their final home matchup of the regular season – a senior day game against Alfred University on November 4th.
